In 2009, Joseph Shores collected material relating to the family history of a large number of families living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. While the collection primarily consists of handwritten notes, there are also family trees, official documents, tax records, marriage records, censuses, correspondences, maps, and military records. Also included are research papers, a Historical American Buildings Survey Inventory, currency collections, a Somerset County Historical Society correspondence, and other miscellaneous items. All are reproductions.

The Richard Cooper papers document his professional and personal activities through his collection of materials dating from 1605 to 2001. The documents focus on the religious and political histories of Wicomico and Worcester County as well as the history of the Mason-Dixon Boundary Line depicted through Cooper’s column in the Daily Times. The papers also document the topographic history of Delmarva through Cooper’s career as an engineering surveyor. Documents from his surveying career and interests include topographic maps, survey certificates, land deeds, and plats. A photograph album documents the construction of his family home at 611 Tony Tank Lane in Salisbury, Maryland. Materials within the collection include newspaper clippings, photographs, family histories, and correspondence. Drafts and manuscripts of Cooper’s published works on the history of Salisbury, Profile of a Colonial Community, Salisbury in Times Gone By, and Portrait of Salisbury are contained within the collection.

Roy C. Pollitt papers

Pollitt’s papers serve as a genealogical study of the history of the Pollitt family on the East Coast. Two-thirds of the collection is devoted to files on family members and related genealogies; the other third divided between correspondence, submissions to his short-lived newsletter "Old Somersett" and photocopies of records from the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. Pollitt’s family files are comprised of an assortment of record types. Not only do many files contain charts for a particular individual’s family branch, but copies of birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, wills, military papers, newspaper clippings and land records. Thus, his collection offers a unique perspective of the Pollitt family from the 17th to the 20th century. His correspondence displays a genuine interest in genealogy and a willingness to assist others with their research pursuits. Frequently, correspondents sent him copies of their own family histories.
J. Douglas Deal papers

The J. Douglas Deal papers document the extensive research done by Deal while writing his dissertation Race and Class in Colonial Virginia: Indians, Englishmen, and Africans on the Eastern Shore during the Seventeenth Century from 1970-1982 at the University of Rochester. Materials within the collection are comprised of photocopies of documents dating from 1663-1866. Photocopied materials include seventeenth-century Accomack County tithables, articles from the William and Mary Quarterly, and genealogical information regarding families from the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Handwritten notes and tithable charts created by Deal are also within the collection.

Mary L. Nock papers document the professional and personal life of Mary Nock, who lived from 1903 to 1987. The papers range 1669 to 1992, as she included in her possession colonial land grants as well as a copy of the Laws of Maryland which established Salisbury in 1735. Her personal papers document her life as a wife and family member of the Layfield-Nock families through photographs, greeting cards, and genealogical research. Mary Nock’s professional papers include materials such as professional correspondence, speeches, drafts of her book It Was a Joy and a Pleasure, awards, as well as ephemera from her time as a politician. Also included in the Nock papers are written works on Mary Nock by Ginger McClain Beningo, as well as Beningo’s notes and correspondence regarding the biographical works from 1990-1992, which make up the bulk of the material.

The John Jacob Collection consists of two parts that document the life and career of attorney and historian, John E. Jacob, Jr.: collected material and personal research. Jacob collected a variety of original documents that comprise series one of the collection, including personal papers of families, ledgers, scrapbooks, land and legal documents, photographs, ephemera, and other paper-based items. Jacob also kept detailed handwritten notes and indices when researching various topics related to the history of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, as well as his handwritten drafts for books and lectures, which comprise series two of the collection. The collection has folder-level descriptions in the inventory.

The collection also includes a complete run of Signs of the Times, the journal of the Old School Baptist faith, from 1875-1969.

This collection contains materials from the Stevenson and Hearn families of Newtown, later Pocomoke City, Maryland from 1748 to 1989. The earliest documents consist of papers of John Stevenson, a doctor who attended the University of Pennsylvania for medicine in 1797 and 1798, studying under Benjamin Rush. Stevenson also settled estates, and the collection includes records detailing some of the accounts he worked. The collection also includes the scrapbooks assembled by Ebenezer Hearn, who was a teacher and involved in the Temperance Movement in the lower Eastern Shore. The scrapbooks contain news clippings related to the local and national Temperance and alcohol prohibition movement, with other clippings of national events, sermons, and education topics.

The Freedom Ainsworth papers document the restoration and preservation efforts of three of the Manokin Historic District’s oldest structures Beckford Manor, Almodington and More And Case It (also known as Holly Hurst), located in Princess Anne, Md. The materials date from 1766-1767, 1803-1999 with the bulk of the material dating from the purchase and restoration of the three structures, 1967-1994. Restoration activities, as well as property histories, are documented via correspondence, detailed measurements and notes, architectural drawings, and photographs. Also documented through a series of ledgers are the accounting transactions of Henry Smith Lankford and H. Fillmore Lankford as well as various merchants from Somerset Count including Teackle Dennis and Teackle.

The papers of the Levin H. Campbell family document the extensive family lineage of the Campbell, Hicks, Hooper, Goldsborough, Denwood, and Hollyday families of Dorchester and Talbot counties, Maryland. Records include handwritten family histories, newspaper clippings and comprehensive biographical information, original and facsimile, were acquired over the course of several decades by Hon. Levin H. Campbell, a direct descendent of Zacharias Campbell and date from 1777-2002. Of note, is a vital records diary begun in 1844 by Levin Hicks Campbell (1820-1868), which was maintained by family members through the 1940s. The diary also includes pages from the Campbell family Bible, and notes histories of Zacharias and his son, Levin.

This collection consists of (8) boxes containing miscellaneous documents collected (and in some cases written by) local historian, J. Howard Adkins. The collection spans primarily the 19th and 20th centuries with material drawn from a variety of commercial, cultural and religious enterprises primarily related to Delmarva, but also including references to Baltimore, Wilmington and Philadelphia. A smaller portion of the collection includes documents sourced from the National Society DAR Library in Washington, D.C. outlining members of the local militia (Somerset, Worcester and Dorchester Counties) who took “Oaths of Fidelity”during the American Revolutionary period and the War of 1812, locally written histories of Riverton, Salisbury, Vienna, Sharptown, Mardela, Barren Creek, the Bradley family among others.

The Papers of J. Millard Tawes consist of the political and personal papers of J. Millard Tawes and of historic Maryland records. The collection documents Tawes’ career as a politician from 1930-1979, including his service as the 54th Governor of Maryland from 1959-1967. It contains speeches, correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera offering insight into fifty years of state and national politics. The collection includes Tawes’ speeches on the Freedom Riders and on the Cambridge Riots of 1963. It also includes correspondence between Tawes and Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

The Somerset County Bible Society records document the activities and extensive membership of the religious organization whose purpose was to distribute Bibles and promote further interest in the scripture. Located in Somerset County, Maryland, the organization’s records date from its inception in 1828-2018 with the bulk of the material encompassing the annual meetings and membership rosters, 1875-1986. Corresponding organization material also includes a scrapbook from annual meetings, correspondence and deposit receipts from the Maryland Bible Society and a Bible from 1794.

Abstract: The Albert Laws papers consist of the official and personal records of Albert Laws, and the family records of Margaret Laws Engle, Victor Laws Jr., and Maude Perdue Laws Truitt. The collection documents Albert Laws’ career as an officer in the United States Army, including his service in the Spanish American War and in the Philippine-American War from 1889-1908. The papers include a photograph album and ephemera from the West Point Class of 1893; correspondence, documents and photographs of the 24th US Infantry and 35th Infantry, USV; an eyewitness account of the Battle of San Juan Hill; and a proclamation signed by Emilio Aguinaldo, the first President of the Philippines. The papers also include Albert Laws’ personal correspondence from 1889-1908, with notes by his niece, Margaret Laws Engle. The collection also documents the family genealogy of the Bacon, Laws and Truitt families of Sussex County, Delaware and Wicomico and Worcester Counties, Maryland from 1795-1997. The papers include the personal correspondence and financial records of William L. Laws from 1853-1924 and genealogical notes from Margaret Laws Engle, Victor Laws Jr and Maude Perdue Laws Truitt. The papers also include a survey from 1795, records of the 30th Virginia Infantry Regiment, CSA from 1862 and a business ledger from 1864-1896.

The Lester Laws papers consist of the records of Laws Construction Company and of the personal papers of Lester Laws and of his family from 1816 to 1994. The collection contains advertising, photographs, financial ledgers, correspondence, receipts and blueprints offering insight into the development of the infrastructure of the Delmarva Peninsula between 1920 and 1959. The company records include dozens of advertisements for construction equipment, tools and building materials and photographs of construction projects in progress. The collection also includes Lester Laws’ genealogy notes, and the personal papers of his daughter, Helen Laws Pomar. Pomar attended Salisbury State Teachers College, now Salisbury University, and served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. Her college score reports, military manuals, and copies of a post-newspaper from Camp White, Oregon, provide a glimpse into the educational and military experience of women in the 1930s and 1940s.

Worcester County Court records consist of records of the Register of Wills, the Orphans’ Court, the Circuit Court, and the Department of Public Works of Worcester County, Maryland from 1823-1991. The bulk of collection is related to the settlement of estates from 1825-1919. These estate vouchers, or debts owed by and to the deceased, include those not only of white farmers, merchants and attorneys, but also of Robert Henry, an African American ship captain, and of Wong Bong, a Chinese laborer. Among Henry’s estate vouchers is a receipt from 1905 for repairs to the schooner BEERSHEBA, while among Bong’s estate vouchers is an example of Chinese calligraphy from 1914. The collection includes papers of Thomas D. Purnell, a Register of Wills, from 1890-1897, and of William Kerbin, an attorney, from 1921-1930. It also includes circuit court records of the dissolution of a business partnership between Calvine Howerton and William Duncan from 1916-1931, and records of the Department of Public Works from 1948-1991. The collection offers insight not only into Worcester County’s legal proceedings, but also into the diversity of the county’s population and into two centuries of the county’s economic development and growth.

The Serrell Family Collection documents the personal and family history of Andrew Serrell (1923-2018) including the Serrell family, Demetre family, Odier family, and other ancestors. Personal items relating to Andrew Serrell's career in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1974 include pilot logs, photographs, naval orders, and other service-related documents. Serrell's paternal family, including the puppeteer Edith Serrell, lived primarily in Dobbs Ferry, New York and are documented through photographs, correspondence, and other documents. Serrell's maternal family--the Demetre and Odier families--frequently went back and forth between France, New Orleans, and New York City. This branch of the family is heavily documented through family histories, correspondence, photographs, drawings, and business papers. There are also three framed portrait paintings and several artifacts.

Wroten was an Easton native and worked as a professor and chairman for the history and political science departments at Salisbury University for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1980. Dr. Wroten's teaching materials include articles and notes he had for specific topics, such as the American Civil War, Native American history, early colonial life, and local history, as well as syllabi and research papers from students. Wailes, the Visiting Professor of Hebrew at Princeton Theological Seminary, honors Gunby’s business and civic contributions to the city of Salisbury. The collection also includes a scrapbook commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Gunby’s Hardware in 1972.

Trader (1931-2012) cover his efforts to document family history on the Delmarva Peninsula and burial sites in Maryland through both independent research and as a member of the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites (CPMBS) between 1988 and 2012. The family history research is most substantial series in the collection with particular focus on the Trader surname. The burial site research features records for sites in Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties. The bulk of the CPMBS records document the Coalition’s activities, correspondence, and legislative efforts while Trader served as president and on the board of directors. A small portion of the collection contains the early records of the social club, Eastern Shore Singles.

Joseph Moore, a Berlin, Worcester County, Maryland attorney, devoted the better part of 20-plus years to researching and writing on the trial and outcome of the murder of Green Davis and his family by Euel Lee aka Orphan Jones, 1863-2006. The series of documents culminated in the publication, “Murder on Maryland’s Eastern Shore: Race, politics, and the Case of Orphan Jones”. Records document the proceedings of the events surrounding the Davis family murders. Presentments and court materials by Lee’s attorney Bernard Ades with corresponding newspaper accounts reflect the legal proceedings of confessed murderer Euel Lee / Orphan Jones, and his ultimate death by lynching in the Baltimore County Jail, 1933. Records within this set also reflect Moore’s vested interest in Worcester County history, including the Henry and Dirickson families, as well as the Civil War, specifically Purnell’s Legion, and the freedmen of color who served for the Union and Confederate Armies. Photostatic copies of manumissions, and general enrollment records for the duration of the war, as well as an original receipt for enslaved persons in 1863, reveal Moore’s commitment to Worcester County, Maryland.

The Gunby Family papers document the Gunby family lineage which began in Somerset County, Maryland in the late 17th century. The materials date from 1854 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1971 to 1994 when Mr. George Hann began to conduct research on the lineage of the Gunby family and associated family lines. Earlier records are included; however, they are photocopies of originals. Documenting records include Clara Gunby’s journal, family history lineage, and correspondence from George Hann to Gunby family members in the United States, Canada, England, and the South Pacific.

Assorted materials from Whitehaven Heritage Association storage includes 1901 set of "The Courier" newspaper; misc. Jeffers to Conor Ralph Bennig in 1976 related to Christian faith and one from John W. Davis to his wife in 1855. An audio cassette tape from Emily Griffon's funeral service in 2000. There is an epic poem written in 1992. Additionally, there is a series of land plats for S. W. Dolby's land created by P.S. Shockley from 1903 and 1918 and a patenet for "Hayward's Delight", 1910. Finally there is a map of Delaware with an arrow to Bethel Church.

This collection includes family research, publications, photos and historical materials from the Wicomico County Free Library (now Wicomico Public Libraries). Series 1 is family research related to the Dashiell family and some materials related to other families.The Dashiell family documents consist of hand-written family history manuscripts and family trees. Two folders contain other family history research and records. The second series is historical materials. The United Fund of Wicomico County records are documents related to contributions by local businesses and the contents of scrapbooks for yearly fund drives. The 1856 school workbook contains mathematics notes. The legal records are an index of Wicomico County civil court cases, a Works Progress Administration record of workers on the Johnson Pond Spillway construction, and photo reproductions of manuscript records of postmasters of Wicomico and Somerset Counties. The Creative Works are two sheet music booklets, prints of Wicomico County sketches, and a list of winners of the Salisbury Award. The books are a pictorial history of the American Civil War from 1862, Delaware American Revolution bicentennial booklet on Caesar Rodney, A Handbook for Delmarva Archaeology, and a facsimile reproduction in book form of The Proceedings of the Constitutional Convention of 1776 and First Maryland Constitution. Series 3 comprises publications of local interest and content. Series 4 consists of photos and images associated with the Salisbury and Wicomico County area. Some Words About Preservation was a publication of the Maryland Historical Trust that gave news on the status of historical site preservation. Tidewater Times contains articles related to Eastern Shore topics, as well as advertisements of area businesses. The collection of journals and journal articles consist of Maryland and Delaware archaeology articles and journals, two copies of Shellfish Digest from winter 1979, and four issues of the Old Somerset newsletter from 1985. Series 4 contains photos and images of Wicomico County and Salisbury dating from the 1890s to the 1970s.

The Whitehead-Beer Collection includes the personal collections of George I. Whitehead Jr., Dorothy Buehl Beer, and Barbara Beer Whitehead. George cataloged his time in the United States Army Air Corps during World War Two from enlistment to honorary discharge. This includes special orders, flight records, awards, and other miscellaneous paperwork. He took photos during his service, along with Pesos from the Philippines. Dorothy collected magazines, newspaper clippings, and hand-written letters all about knitting. She also held onto her autograph book from Halsey Junior High School in 1935. Barbara's collection includes a Bible, various music books for piano, and a music book for guitar.

The Morris Family papers document the Salisbury, Maryland residents who lived at 533 South Division Street and owned and operated the Morris Millwork Company. Photographic prints and funeral ephemera document the relationships of Levin Merrill Morris, his wife, S. Martha and their daughter, Dorothy Catherine, 1890-1955. Additionally, handwritten notes on family birth, marriage and death records have been maintained, this includes an 1864 Evidence of Title for Richard Morris of the US Colored Troop. Dorothy’s friendships with her college classmates are documented in a scrapbook she compiled while at Temple University as well as in The Tatler, the yearbook of Wicomico High School.

The collection consists of photographs of American troops during the construction of a bridge, photographs of Adolf Hitler and German troops, French postcards, Reichsbank notes ranging from 1 to 100,000 that date between 1908 and 1923, Dutch athletic awards from the 1930s, German cigarettes with Nazi stamps, a Nazi pin and uniform cutting, an American stamp, and coins from Germany, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Great Britain, Canada, and the United States that date between 1874 and 1986. The collection also includes a German ammunitions box with Fooks' addresses written on top.

The papers of Anne Morris Clay document her occupation as a land records researcher in the Maryland counties of Wicomico and Worcester. The materials date from 1886-1997 with a bulk of materials dating from 1980-1997. Materials include correspondence and research material regarding Cherie Cozin's Purnell property off Shore Side Road in Dames Quarter as well as June Petit's Simpleton property and correspondence with Dave Nutter pertaining to the property Nutter’s Neck. Materials also include transcriptions of the 1759-1865 land documents, 17th-century certificates of land patent, 18th-century deeds, 19th century Acworth Plat, and deeds for Nutter’s Neck. In addition, there are research materials on Sampson Burbage (1818-1881) and his properties in Powellsville. Also, there are property research records regarding William Hull's Muddy Hole Road and Tyaskin properties and a biography of Milford W. Twilley. A portion of the materials belonged to Ruth Harcum’s father, Benjamin Franklin Kennerly, Jr. who was the mayor of Salisbury from 1912-1914. Also included are books from the Morris, Kennerly, and Harcum families. Additional items include postcards with personal correspondence to Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Harcum and other family members dating to the early twentieth century. Histories of Wicomico County and ephemera pertaining to the Sesqui-bi-centennial can also be found in this collection. Wicomico County specific improvement plans including the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Program and the Salisbury Metro Core Comprehensive Plan have also been incorporated into this collection. This collection also includes a unique collection of sexual education booklets and Victorian-era autograph albums.

While the record dates range from approximately 1890 to 2020, the majority of the collection dates between 1920 and 1980. Included are property surveys, utility maps and plans, water works materials, and other infrastructure-related documents used to build, maintain, and alter structures and properties in the City of Salisbury. Notably included are 1988 aerial photographs of the city (contact prints and negatives), project progress photographs, and microfiche reproductions of many of the oversize items. The Bokal-Cotter collection consists of primarily correspondence from individuals including Mary Avis Bokal, Elizabeth Cotter Bokal (Mary Avis's mother), Paul J. Cotter (Elizabeth's brother), Mary G. Cotter (Paul and Elizabeth's mother), among others, dating from 1894 to 1991 with the bulk of the letters dating from 1942 to 1968. While many of the letters seem to regard family and social events from the Broome County, New York family, Mary Avis Bokal and Paul J. Cotter both lived in Washington, D.C. where Bokal went to American University and Cotter worked in the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings, unidentified photographs and negatives, postcards, and ephemera that mostly belonged to Mary Avis Bokal.

The K. King Burnett papers encompass the executive activities and operations of numerous environmental organizations. These documents reflect the impact that preservation regulations had on the Delmarva Peninsula specifically, Wicomico and Worcester counties as it evolved from 1960 - 2014, and the entirety of the papers span from as early as 1894 - 2014. Burnett served as a legal advisor for these organizations. His papers contain numerous board of director reports which reflect by-law drafts and final copies, logistics proceedings regarding agency consolidation, and documents entailing litigation representation including the enforcement of environmental regulations. Organizations of note include Committee to Preserve Assateague Island, Wicomico Planning, Zoning, and Development Committee, and Greater Salisbury Committee.

The Theodore Dize Papers document the shipping business of the bugeye James G. Blaine, captained by Theodore and Westley Dize, between 1894 and 1923. An additional account from 1995 records the names of watermen who shipped out of Baltimore at the turn of the century to dredge oysters. Dize shipped out of Crisfield, Smith Island, and Baltimore, dredging oysters and transporting merchandise. The shipping business is documented through agreements, worker records, and extensive receipts. Also included are printed ephemera including book advertisements.

William Heaton Papers

This collection contains items and documents from the musical career of William Heaton Whitworth, more commonly known as William Heaton, spanning circa 1900-2006 (with the bulk from 1920-1950). William Heaton was born in England in 1891 and moved to Massachusetts in 1909. He traveled the country performing with various theatre groups. In 1914, while docked in Maryland with the James Adam Floating Theatre, he met Agnes Tawes, the woman he would marry just two-weeks later in Salisbury, Maryland. He continued his musical career, playing the organ and piano for the Carolina Theatre, Palace Theatre, Hunt’s Casino Theatre and New Arcade Theatre. In 1944, Heaton and his wife opened Heaton’s Karmel Korn, a popcorn stand on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Heaton died of a heart attack in 1952, at the age of 61.

The Brady J. Dayton Collection contains four types of materials: a copy of Dayton's memoir recounting events in his young life written in 1964, transcribed journal entries from his time in Russia and Turkey, scanned and printed images from the sketchbook he kept from 1904-1905 and a newspaper article from 1997 which discusses Dayton's participation in World War I. Dayton presents an idyllic childhood against a backdrop of poverty, describing the hard life of fisherman on the Eastern Shore. His entries from his early years in the Navy offer insight into the life of naval officers in the early 1900s, as well as how Americans were perceived abroad. Russia (particularly Tiflis (Tiblisi), the capital of Georgia) and ports on the Mediterranean are described in detail.

The Sussex County Sheriff records document court cases from 1903-1995 in Sussex County, Delaware. The collection contains financial records for the court and sheriff’s department as well as specific records of costs and outcomes from the court cases occurring from 1903 to 1995. There are records for both the Sussex County Superior Court, as well as the Court of Common Pleas. The records are largely limited to Ledgers, Fee Books and Receipt Dockets. The Ledgers contain basic budgetary information for the Court and the Sheriff’s department, recording costs covered by the court’s budget. The Fee Books record cases by month, with a record of the fees which were to be paid by the court system’s budget. The Receipt Dockets contain information on individual cases and features an index of cases with monetary information and case outcomes.

Wilson are a comprehensive documentation of his extensive research conducted to author his four-volume series on Crisfield, Maryland and Somerset County, Maryland as well as numerous articles written for the Crisfield Times. Manuscripts, proof copies, and unpublished materials authored by Wilson and his associates are also included. The amassed collection of newspaper clippings, birth, marriage and death records, family histories and typed articles are a testament to the people of Crisfield, 1907-2000 with the bulk of the material dating from 1968-1980.

The Rayner Brothers Incorporated records documents the growth and development of both Rayner Farm Inc. and Rayner Brothers Inc. The materials date from 1909-1993 with the bulk of the material dating from 1956-1970. Records include meeting minutes which document the company’s by-laws, financial records, and business concerns. These records also include stock certificates, land deeds, ledgers containing plant orders and expenses, and correspondence which include letters of recommendation for Hedley Rayner. Also included are a series of the Rayner’s Berry Book published from 1926-1992. Photographs document the development of the farm and the different treatments implemented to increase strawberry growth.
Thomas Family Photographs

These approximately 250 photographs were taken between 1909 and 1982, though primarily in the 1930s and 1940s, and document the lives of family and friends of the Thomas family from Detroit, Michigan. Many of the photographs feature Costrella Thomas (later Griggs, then Hightower), who was the daughter of Bill and Lucille (maiden name Nelson). Also included is Lucille's mother, Ella Price, both of whom moved from Mississippi after the death of Lucille's father, John Nelson, between 1920 and 1930. There are photos of members from the Havard family, Mary Washington, George and Gerald Taylor, Mrs. Provost (who owned land in Ontario, Canada), and many other individual photos of identified people.

John Chamberlin papers

The John Chamberlin papers document his archeological excavations in Maryland. Records include his archeological surveys, artifact lists, proposal documents, maps and artifacts collected during his digs. These materials date from 1910-2010, with the bulk of the material dating from 1991-2003. Many of the documents relate to William Claiborne, who established a trading settlement on southern Kent Island in 1631. Chamberlin also excavated at Rich Neck Manor, later named Sherwood Manor, in St. Michaels, Maryland which is assumed to have been originally occupied in 1649-1652 by Captain William Mitchell. The Kent Fort materials include information on The Claiborne Project which was an archaeological survey that attempted to locate Kent Fort using Chamberlin’s research. The archeological artifacts contain Native American and colonial finds dating to the 17th and 18th century. These artifacts include bones, stones, tools, beads, and pottery, pipe stems fragments, and wooden and metal artifacts including coins.

Anthony 'Tony' Sarbanes was an American athlete, scholar, educator, and soldier born in Salisbury, MD in 1937 to Greek immigrant parents. Sarbanes played basketball for Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), and later embarked on a long career as a coach for various Salisbury schools in basketball, golf, and soccer. After serving as a teacher for several years, Sarbanes served as Vice Principal for several Salisbury schools, eventually becoming Principal for Wicomico High School and the first Principal of Parkside High School.

The Willard Stevens papers are a series of scrapbooks documenting his life’s journey called “Walking Short”. He documents his childhood on the farm in Snow Hill, Maryland, his military stationing in the United States Army Air Corps in Florida, and his ministry years as a Methodist pastor. Stevens also notes national events including racial tensions of the Civil Rights movement, the deaths of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and President John F. Kennedy, as well as the various wars of his lifetime. His papers also document the adoption and citizenship process, he and his wife took to adopt a Korean girl, Robin. His papers serve as a life narrative from 1917-2014 that document his travels from Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina, California, Missouri, and Florida.

This collection contains objects, print and books dedicated to those who served in World War I and World War II. The first part of the collection is a history of the 29th Division. The 29th Division was comprised of National Guard units from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania who served in World War I. The roster accompanying the collection is for Company I of Salisbury, MD and dates to October 8, 1918. David Grier’s father was a 2nd Lt in Company I. The uniforms and objects in this collection belonged to Alice Nelson Mitchell. Mitchell was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp during World War II. David Grier is the son-in-law of Alice Nelson Mitchell. The top hat in this collection was sent by Captain Lee Donald Smith to Bette Grier Graham during World War II. The names on the hat reflect the many places visited by Captain Smith.

There are dozens of pictures of Twilley and his farms, as well as correspondence between him and Arthur C. Abbott of Abbott and Cobb, Inc., the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Wicomico County School District.

This collection contains numerous mementos of Frank’s life, in newspaper clippings, photographs, awards, and a scrapbook. The scrapbook entitled “Sex Life of Adak” contains newsletters from his time in Adak, Alaska during his military career as well as comics of the time. A photocopy of the contents of the scrapbook is also included as well as a map of Adak. (The actual scrapbook can be found in box three.)There are awards and certificates from volunteer service, newspaper clippings from his volunteer career, and obituaries for his brother, his sister-in-law, and himself, as well as his birth certificate, and lease documentation for one place that he lived. The collection also contains a variety of play programs from the Community Players and three Playbills, from 1958, 1960, and 1961.

The Henry Shipley Parker Papers contains photographs, newspapers, plaques, awards, certificates and political information ranging from the 1920s to 2012. The photographs include family pictures of Parker's father, wife and other family members. There are also a number of photographs that are autographed including one signed by Senator John Kerry. In the collection, there are also photographs of Parker’s high school reunion and a Wicomico High Class of 1939 class photo. Also included are photographs of the Adkins family, who owned the company where Henry Parker and his father worked for an extended period of time. The newspapers include articles on the Class of 1939’s reunion, accomplishments of both Henry Parker and his father, and articles on projects in Wicomico County. There are many plaques in this collection illustrating the number of accomplishments Henry Parker made in his lifetime. Included are Fire Department plaques for years of dedication to helping different departments and a Baseball Hall of Membership Plaque. Also plaques from Wicomico County for serving the county and for the many things he helped accomplish; such as the Athletic Complex, the Corrections Facility, the Detention Center, help to the Sheriff’s Department and many more. Included is an Apple from the Teacher Award, the Marilyn J. Praisner Public Service award, the Jack R. Nichols Humanitarian award, the G. Maxwell Armor award and many certificates. This collection includes Henry S. Parker’s political information, including voting records, as well as government Political information, including the 1957 Presidential Inauguration Program. Interesting things included are a US district court case involving the Black population in Wicomico county felt they were suffering from a history of official discrimination and a soldiers World War I Bible.

Leland Starnes was born in Sandersville, Georgia on February 5, 1923. He served in World War II and attended both Harvard and Yale. Throughout his life, Starnes taught at the Graham Eckes School, the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, the University of Pittsburgh, and Salisbury State College. He worked at Salisbury State College from 1972 until his death on May 14, 1980. The Leland Starnes Papers include production files from Starnes' tenure at Salisbury State along with personal items and some correspondence. Some files in the collection were created by Robert Cloyd. Playbills from unaffiliated theatres (inventory attached) are also included and range from 1921 to 2010. There is also a video created by Starnes' son, Tim, and Gary Weber in 1989 entitled "SSC Theatre: The Starnes Years, 1972-1980."

Transcription of the World War I diary of Corporal Merrill Gordy Culver who documented his experience from registration at the Atkinson Voting House in Worcester County, Maryland to his transport aboard the SS MESABA and his service as a gunner who served in various locales throughout France. Also included in the transcription are copies of the letters and cards Corp. Culver sent home to his wife, Lillian, 1917-1919. Culver's wife, Lillian documented her life in an oral history from her birth in 1898 in Philadelphia to the family's move to Salisbury in 1904 and her continuing life and education. The oral history was given to their son, Merrill Gordy Culver III., in 1992. Digital photographs and digital transcriptions of Mrs. Culver's diaries from family vacations are also included.

The Office of Sports Information maintains the public relations for all Salisbury University athletics, including the production of publications, maintenance of statistics, and the university’s athletics Hall of Fame. It is part of University Advancement and External Affairs and began as part of the Office of Public Relations. The Sports Information Collection consists of materials relating to athletics at Salisbury University from the 1920s to 2014, although the bulk of the items date between 1972 and 2005. While the majority of the items are printed materials, including photographs, slides, and negatives, there are several audiovisual items such as VHS tapes, digital video, and audio cassettes. The collection also includes newspaper clippings, press releases, schedules, handbooks, brochures, and other ephemeral items.

The Salisbury University Alumni Association was founded to “develop and foster an abiding loyalty to Salisbury University; promote a professional and ethical spirit; encourage active participation in all activities that pertain to the betterment and growth of the University; unite graduates and undergraduates in Salisbury University; and take such other actions as may be deemed appropriate to promote the interests and welfare of Salisbury University.” (From the Salisbury University Alumni Association website.) The association achieves their mission by hosting events throughout the country to unite alumni, hosting reunions, and distributing newsletters. The association encourages its members to send notices of nuptials, births, and other lifetime achievements for publishing in the association’s newsletter. The Alumni Collection contains proposed constitutions, Alumni Association history, membership and reunion directories, invitations to reunions and other alumni events, wedding and birth announcements, postcards, ephemera, newspaper clippings, newsletters from 1950 to 2005, and a medal commemorating the completion of the Alumni House in 1996. Documents surrounding the Alumni Association’s induction ceremonies from 1931 to 1951 are present.

The British organization crusaded by doing "aggressive Evangelistic work under the auspices of the Episcopal Church of America." Class of 1930 Scrapbook

The Maryland State Normal School at Salisbury opened in September 1925 as a two-year college to train elementary teachers on the state’s Eastern Shore. The fifth class to graduate was in 1930. This loose scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to the State Normal School (now Salisbury University) graduating class of 1930. The scrapbook was collected by Virginia Dryden and presented to the school in 1980 as a celebration of the class’ 50th anniversary. There are approximately 30 photographs of students and faculty going about their daily activities, programs and tickets for various social events, newspaper clippings and Holly Leaf issues, theatre playbills, and materials from the 50th anniversary of the 1930 graduating class.

Weekly meeting minutes contain the bulk of the records, documenting community engagement, membership, and finances. Year Highlights, wrote by the secretary, are summaries of the weekly meeting minutes for each fiscal year. Membership documentation appear through attendance and membership roll books. Financial records contain annual budgets, donations, and money given to the community. The club’s weekly newsletter, Rotary Tattler, discusses important facts from weekly meeting minutes, membership activity, and community projects. The Princess Anne Rotary Club records, overall, detail the history of the club, how they helped support their community, and who was involved within the club.

Lucille Horsley collection

The Horsley collection is primarily composed of materials collected, copied, and transcribed by Horsley as a product of her research on Pemberton Plantation, located just outside of Salisbury on the Eastern Shore. Notebooks, genealogy charts, research papers, newspaper clippings, duplications of maps from Maryland’s Colonial period to the present, as well as a personal “vertical file” of information relating to area historical sites, events, and peninsula history, are united to compose a collection of personal papers reflecting Horsley’s interests and life’s work. Horsley’s papers will be of interest to those seeking guidance to primary source materials relating to Pemberton plantation (three miles from Salisbury), and its chain of ownership within the Handy family; her extreme diligence in recording her sources and compiling her transcriptions makes this an excellent starting point for unseasoned researchers of Somerset County. The bulk of Horsley’s research was conducted in the 1980's.

The Winifred Helmes Papers document the professional activities of Dr. Winifred G. Helmes from 1931 to 2005 with the bulk of the materials dating between 1954 and 1981. The collection consists primarily of correspondence and documents from her prolific career. From 1951 to 1954, Helmes was part of the executive staff for the American Association of University Women. In 1954, she became Assistant Director of the U.S. Department of Labor's Women's Bureau. She was appointed Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1959. From 1961 to 1967, Helmes served as Academic Dean at the Foxcroft School and at the Samuel Ready School from 1967 to 1968. In 1968, Helmes joined the faculty at Salisbury State College and taught until her retirement in 1981.

The Memoirs and Personal Collections of Anastacio T. Menor was begun in 1934 and continued until at least 1980. The journal consists of collected writings from notable authors, philosophers, politicians, and religious works, in addition to original writing by Anastacio Menor that is often signed with A.T. Menor. While much of Menor's writing concerns finding happiness, some of it is whimsical and less philosophical. He often wrote or collected writings about the relationship of men and women. There are also sections with shorthand translations, serial numbers from $100 bills, and a few newspaper clippings.

The Records of the Library contain records, photographs, and memorabilia from Salisbury University Libraries that range from 1950 to 1990. The University Libraries began as the College Library and was housed in Holloway Hall. In 1957, a building known as the College Library was built. The building was dedicated as Blackwell Library in 1966. In 2016, the library moved from Blackwell to the newly constructed Guerrieri Academic Commons. The records include information on the administration, employees, and changes of the Library. Changes mentioned include the building and dedication of Blackwell as well as the Guerrieri Academic Commons. Ledgers and journals in the collection detail incoming books, fines, and lost books. The collection also includes scrapbooks, photographs, and other ephemera relating to the library. Library publications and material relating to events hosted by the library are present in the collection.

Joe Long was an American athlete, soldier, railroad worker, and politician born in 1921 in Delmar, Maryland. The Joe Long collection contains material compiled by Joe Long and his wife Mabel, who acted his campaign manager during campaigns. The Seaford Nylon Plant was the centerpiece of Seaford, Delaware for many years, this included the production of the factory newsletter, The Threadline. Contained within this collection, the newsletter documents the day to day lives of the factory workers, 1938-2002. This included, company picnics, bowling nights, fox hunts, and special events in staff members lives. It even includes poems and paintings by staff. In the Threadline’s combined 54 year run, in addition to employee life, it covered the expansion, and problems of the Nylon factory. The Threadline also shows how Seaford employees where treated. DuPont would reward company service with company made products and service emblems, even producing booklets to show said rewards.

These cook books, most of which were created in the 20th century and some in the early 2000s, were collected by Lynne Bratten of Salisbury, Maryland. While some are pamphlets from food corporations like Betty Crocker, Campbell's, or Pillsbury, others are from smaller church groups in places like Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Several cook books are widely distributed and include books about 15th century cooking, colonial recipes, and American home cooking in general. However, most of the cookbooks are either produced by a food corporation or a small collective of people.

Included are photographs, artifacts, a personal narrative by Detweiler, audiovisual items, programs, and many chronological scrapbooks maintained by Detweiler's wife. While Detweiler's career spans Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York, the collection primarily documents his experience in Federalsburg, Maryland where he played on, and later managed, the Federalsburg Athletics.

Dr. James M. Welsh joined the English faculty at Salisbury State College (now Salisbury University) in 1971 and co-founded Literature/Film Quarterly in 1973 with Tom Erskine. For many years, he reviewed films in local newspapers and television. The James Welsh Collection includes Welsh's film reviews from the 1970s to 2013, as well as approximately 2600 film press kits, lobby cards, and press books that were used to write the reviews and 600 u-matic videotape audiovisual press kits used for television. Also included are many film studies journals that date from the 1940s to 2009, an almost complete run of the Literature/Film Quarterly from 1973 to 2009, and teaching materials used in film studies classes. Film titles are included in the inventory.

The Luis Alaniz collection consists of the personal scrapbooks, diaries, photographs, and military memorabilia of World War Two veteran Luis Alaniz. Born October 28, 1922 in Dallas, Texas, Alaniz enlisted in the United States Army on September 10, 1940. He was initially a Medical Technician, promoted to Private on May 25, 1941 and later Corporal on July 16, 1942, but was later a technician in the 755th Railway Shop Battalion. Alaniz was sent to Europe (France and Belgium) on December 5, 1943 and returned on October 5, 1945. He later worked for the New Mexico National Guard, United States Air Force in Sandia Base, and was part of the International Chemical Workers Union in Los Angeles, California.

The papers of Sidney and Elsie Northam document their life in Snow Hill, Worcester County, Maryland from 1941-2013 with the bulk of the material dating from 1995-2005. Materials include correspondence between Sidney and Elsie from a 1958 trip to Washington State, Elsie’s daily journal entries with regard to her life as well as the weather and the Northam News, which Elsie wrote to keep friends and family informed on their activities. Also included in the collection are a series of photocopies of the business correspondence, receipts and ledgers of Sidney Northam’s grandfather, James Adkins. Adkins was a blacksmith in Newark, Maryland from 1899-1917. Note: Adkins photocopies were created by Sidney Northam in the late 1990s.
World War II Veterans project records

Written and audio evidence documents the veteran’s enlistment, rank, military unit, and where they were stationed for the duration of the war. Records were collected by Sylvia Bradley and the Westside Historical Society in 1995 with subsequent records periodically added in 1996.

James R. Thrash (b. 1932) was Salisbury University’s library director from 1969 to 1999. He obtained a B.A. from Ohio State University and a MSLA from Western Reserve University. The records consist of the personal and administrative papers of James R. Thrash. Most of the material relates to higher functions in academia such as annual reviews, reports, minutes, policy and procedure manuals. Several folders focus on the expansion of Blackwell Library in the 1970s and some contain research papers written by Thrash while taking English courses at Salisbury State College from 1978 to 1980.

The Willis Tull papers include ephemera related to the Milbourne and Townsend familes of the Delmarva Peninsula. There is an excerpt from the 1931 text "Tidewater Maryland" which notes Ralph Milbourne, as well as scans of documents related to genealogical work done on the Milbourne and Townsend familes. There is an insert article from a magazine on George A. Townsend. Correspondence on "Crisfield, Maryland" letterhead addressed to "Myrtle" from an unknown writer is also included. There is the 1957 commencement and baccalaureate program from the State Teachers College, Towson, Maryland. Albert Richard Tull is mentioned in "Thatcham-Then and Now", 1983. Included is program from Maryland's Four Hundred Monument Rededication and Colonial Ancestors Roster, both from 1992. Finally, there is a copy of a colonial pamphlet from 1659, reprinted in 2002.

The Dorchester County Civil Rights collection documents the Civil Rights movement occurring in Cambridge, Maryland from 1958 -1990 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1961 – 1970. Materials include newspaper clippings, political literature, and campaign materials relating to the Civil Rights movement in Cambridge as well as three scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings related to civil rights demonstrations in Cambridge. The scrapbooks were maintained by Thomas Applegarth, Jr., a member of the anti-protest Dorchester Business and Citizens Association.

The Princess Anne Chapter of the Business and Professional Women’s club was founded in 1956. These records from Princess Anne, Maryland, 1956-1996, reflect the chapters organizational practices and extensively showcases the club’s activeness and successfulness within its community and its members. The club aimed at empowering its women members to the betterment of their professionalism in hopes of creating a better functioning business community. This was promoted by the individual development workshops, community service, participation in committees, and various programs hosted by the club. With the numerous meeting minutes, finance records, history books and newspaper clipping, the fulfillment of the club’s objectives can be seen through its many accomplishments and accolades. Additional records include the Delta Kappa Gamma records, highlight a few of the societies sacred rites, as well as documents the chapter's activities from 1971-1975 through meeting minutes, budgets, and programs.

Benn Maggs was an instructor and sports coach at Salisbury University from 1933 to 1976. He was an amateur photographer who captured many different campus scenes from 1959 and 1983, most of which were athletics. The Maggs Physical Activity Center was named in his honor and he was elected to the Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985.

Joseph and Ilia Fehrer spearheaded activism in Worcester County, Md. from 1972 until 2002, but were also instrumental in petitioning and lobbying for numerous environmental causes along the Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay. The Worcester Environmental Trust records range from 1959 to 2004, and contain executive, financial, and legal records that demonstrate this once effective environmental non-profit organization.

Series 3: Brewington Brothers contains a journal, letters of correspondence, accounting and financial information, and legal documents. Included are articles of incorporation and dissolution of the corporation of the News Publishing Company of Salisbury, Md., as well as memos and letters from managing editors concerning ideas for new marketing strategies in advertising to acquisitions of local news publishing companies of surrounding towns. In addition are materials concerning stockholder and directors meetings.

Touart's files (Series 1) are arranged by property identifier (WI-XXX) and commonly include a Maryland Historic Trust report, deeds, photographs, articles, and other relevant sources related to the historic property. Also included are Touart's subsequent reports, handwritten notes, photographic slides, architectural drawing rolls, and CDs containing a variety of files. A.K. Talbot papers

Dr. Alfred K. Talbot was born in New York City on September 1, 1916. He attended the Hampton Institute and later the college of William and Mary. Prior to his tenure at Salisbury University, Talbot taught as a teacher, was named Principal of Carver Elementary School, and became the Assistant Principal of Burton Heights School. From 1962 to 1964 he served as the President of the Virginia Federation of Parents and Teachers and the Virginia Teachers Association. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Teachers Association and in 1968 became Supervisor of Elementary Schools of Williamsburg Public Schools. In 1970, he joined the Education and Sociology departments at Salisbury University and was the University's first full time African American professor. Talbot died on July 20, 2004 after 30 years of service to the university. Throughout his life, Talbot was involved with the Civil Rights Movement, the NAACP, and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Talbot's collection include correspondence, reports, and other printed material from his tenure at Salisbury University, his involvement with the Civil Rights Movement, and his activities within Virginia's education system.

This collection consists of Briddell's photography taken in countries within Asia (Philippines, Korea, Japan, Thailand, India, Israel), Africa, and Europe (Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands). Also included is a 16mm film of the 1963 Senegalese film, Borom Sarret.

Pat Russell papers

The papers of Pat Russell document her community preservation activities from 1972-2004 in Whitehaven, Maryland and surrounding regional areas. These accomplishments include her involvement with the Wicomico County Historical Properties, Inc., which are documented via the restoration efforts of the Whitehaven Hotel and the development of the Whitehaven Historic District. Documenting resources include correspondence, architectural drawings, newspaper clippings, fiduciary responsibilities, and photographs. Regional oral histories document the shanty boats and hunting lodges which were once prominently featured along the seaside of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Cassette tape recordings and transcripts of these interviews with local people document their experiences which include Bob-O-Dell, Pope’s Island, the High Winds Club, and waterfowl hunting on Assateague and Chincoteague Islands. The oral histories also document varying storms that reshaped the coastline, as well as the development and expansion of cities and towns on the Delmarva Peninsula. Also documented through oral history are the personal experiences of Whitehaven residents which include African American segregation and their lives in various Eastern Shore communities including Taylorsville, the Germantown Rosenwald School, Ocean City and Church Creek.

The Salisbury University Architectural & Engineering Services/Capital Projects Office supports campus Master and Strategic planning efforts related to facilities and site development. Working in support of, and in coordination with, other University offices, A & E Services/Capital Projects manages the design, planning and construction of capital-funded, system-funded and large University projects. The office is responsible for Architectural and Engineering Services, which includes several million dollars of “in-house” design and construction administration annually. The records include reports, correspondence, and other files of the Architectural & Engineering Services/Capital Projects Office at Salisbury University. Some records pertain to campus structures that are no longer standing such as the Ruth Powell Dining Hall, Potomac Hall, the Allenwood Shopping Center, and the Maintenance Building.

Included in this collection is a printer manual, information about book binding companies, micropublishing companies, fax machine companies, expenditure and analysis paperwork, and information about various subscriptions Blackwell Library had to collect new materials, especially material on microfilm. There is also a Masters Theses by Kimberly D. Hoffman-Goodson entitled: The Effect of Simulation on Data Retention in a Group of Nursing Students.

The Griffin Family History Collection contains two CDs related to the Griffin Family. It contains a photograph of Sarah Emily Covington Griffin, and three oral histories. The CDs are interviews of various community members by members of the Griffin family. The first is an interview of Mr. Frank Williams and Miss Annie Justice interviewed by Sally Griffin and Susan Griffin Hill (Circa 1976). The second is an interview of Emily Covington Griffin done by Cara Griffin (Circa 1980's) and Miss Mildred Wilson done by Susan Griffin (March 27, 1979). The third is an interview of Miss Minnie Kenney interviewed by Sally Griffin (Circa 1976).
