Abstract

The Henry Shipley Parker Papers contains photographs, newspapers, plaques, awards, certificates and political information ranging from the 1920s to 2012. The photographs include family pictures of Parker's father, wife and other family members. There are also a number of photographs that are autographed including one signed by Senator John Kerry. In the collection, there are also photographs of Parker’s high school reunion and a Wicomico High Class of 1939 class photo. Also included are photographs of the Adkins family, who owned the company where Henry Parker and his father worked for an extended period of time. The newspapers include articles on the Class of 1939’s reunion, accomplishments of both Henry Parker and his father, and articles on projects in Wicomico County. There are many plaques in this collection illustrating the number of accomplishments Henry Parker made in his lifetime. Included are Fire Department plaques for years of dedication to helping different departments and a Baseball Hall of Membership Plaque. Also plaques from Wicomico County for serving the county and for the many things he helped accomplish; such as the Athletic Complex, the Corrections Facility, the Detention Center, help to the Sheriff’s Department and many more. Included is an Apple from the Teacher Award, the Marilyn J. Praisner Public Service award, the Jack R. Nichols Humanitarian award, the G. Maxwell Armor award and many certificates. This collection includes Henry S. Parker’s political information, including voting records, as well as government Political information, including the 1957 Presidential Inauguration Program. Interesting things included are a US district court case involving the Black population in Wicomico county felt they were suffering from a history of official discrimination and a soldiers World War I Bible.

Biographical History

Henry Shipley Parker was born in Salisbury, Maryland in 1922. Parker died, at the age of 90, on September 2, 2012. His father, Thomas Parker, served as the Mayor of Salisbury and his brother served on the City Council. Parker graduated from Wicomico High School in 1939. He married Nellie Truitt of Pittsville, Maryland. Parker attended regular High School Reunions with all of his classmates. Henry Parker retired after working for the E.S. Adkins and Company lumber company for forty five years and serving as Vice President. Parker had a successful business career. Parker enlisted in the Army, in 1942, and he served during World War Two. Parker served on the City Council for four terms, three of those terms he stood as President. Henry Parker in 1967 acted as the general Chairman of the Wicomico County Centennial. In 1974 he received the Chamber Civic award for his work as President of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce. Parker contributed in many other ways, he acted as the Vice President to the Maryland Association of Counties where he received awards for his work. Also, he represented Wicomico County on the Legislative Tax Committee in Annapolis. He was an honorary member of the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame; and had a sports complex named after him, the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex. In 1987 he received an award from the Wicomico County Educators Association. Another large accomplishment of Henry Parker was his election to the Wicomico County Council in 1982, where he served as president for twelve years. The City of Salisbury declared October 24, 2004 “Henry Parker Day” in honor of all the years of public service. In addition Parker was a member of the West Side Wicomico Lions Club and spent many years with different Volunteer Fire Fighter companies. Henry S. Parker accomplished many things in his life time and dedicated many years to the people of Wicomico County.
