Leland Starnes papers

Leland Starnes was born in Sandersville, Georgia on February 5, 1923. He served in World War II and attended both Harvard and Yale. Throughout his life, Starnes taught at the Graham Eckes School, the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, the University of Pittsburgh, and Salisbury State College. He worked at Salisbury State College from 1972 until his death on May 14, 1980. The Leland Starnes Papers include production files from Starnes' tenure at Salisbury State along with personal items and some correspondence. Some files in the collection were created by Robert Cloyd. Playbills from unaffiliated theatres (inventory attached) are also included and range from 1921 to 2010. There is also a video created by Starnes' son, Tim, and Gary Weber in 1989 entitled "SSC Theatre: The Starnes Years, 1972-1980."

Robert Kerr Cloyd attended Carnegie Mellon University and Syracuse University. The Robert K. Cloyd Papers consist of the design work created for productions of the Salisbury State Theatre from 1972 to 1979 under the direction of Leland Starnes, as well as other designs that Cloyd created in the 1970s. Included are the designs from when the United States Department of State invited him to exhibit in a show of young American artists travelling in China as part of the cultural exchange programs involved in Ping Pong Diplomacy.
