Abstract

The records of the Music, Theatre, and Dance Department contain materials documenting the history and productions of the three different programs. The materials date between 1961 and 2024 and range from photographs, administrative files, programs, newspaper clippings, press releases, audio visual recordings, scrapbooks and more.

Administrative History

The Peter and Judy Jackson Music Program’s Bachelor of Arts, accredited with the National Association of Schools of Music since 2006, presents the study of music as an integral part of a liberal arts education. Working closely with other departments in the University’s nationally acclaimed Fulton School of Liberal Arts, the music program provides a wealth of musical opportunities for students of any major. All majors perform with SU’s acclaimed ensembles, which range from chamber choir to jazz to world drum.

The Bobbi Biron Theatre Program at SU fosters an environment that encourages innovative performances and designs where students can take risks and discover their personal artistic point of view. Each student’s path is catered specifically on their interest, whether that be in performance, design, management, or somewhere in between. Students are involved in every aspect of creating bold performances, preparing them for careers and graduate programs in the entertainment industry. Our award-winning faculty serve to inspire and challenge each student's artistic and intellectual potential. The Bobbi Biron Theatre Program is anchored in the classical tradition, the program examines theatre through aesthetic education and criticism, creative expressions, and historical and sociocultural perspectives. Several mainstage performances are produced annually.

The Dance Program inspires developing artists to broaden their knowledge of diverse dance styles and cultures. Our faculty’s extensive knowledge trains dancers with individualized care and attention. Students leave the program with a range of dance techniques, choreographic and performance experiences, teaching skills, and the tools to create their unique vision in the dance field. All students may audition for inclusion in the SU Dance Company, which presents contemporary, jazz, ballet, hip-hop, modern and musical theatre dances on two annual concerts.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Music, Theatre, and Dance Department contain materials documenting the history and productions of the three different programs. The materials date between 1961 and 2024 and range from photographs, administrative files, programs, posters, newspaper clippings, press releases, audio visual recordings, scrapbooks and more. Most of the materials pertain to the Dance program, however there are several recordings from the Music program. Audio visual materials include CDs, VHS tapes, and DVDs.
