Leland Starnes was born in Sandersville, Georgia on February 5, 1923. He served in World War II and attended both Harvard and Yale. Throughout his life, Starnes taught at the Graham Eckes School, the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, the University of Pittsburgh, and Salisbury State College. He worked at Salisbury State College from 1972 until his death on May 14, 1980. The Leland Starnes Papers include production files from Starnes' tenure at Salisbury State along with personal items and some correspondence. Some files in the collection were created by Robert Cloyd. Playbills from unaffiliated theatres (inventory attached) are also included and range from 1921 to 2010. There is also a video created by Starnes' son, Tim, and Gary Weber in 1989 entitled "SSC Theatre: The Starnes Years, 1972-1980."
Leland Starnes was born in Sandersville, Georgia on February 5, 1923. After serving in World War II, he went on to earn two degrees from Harvard University including a Bachelor’s degree and a Masters in Fine Arts from its School of Education in 1951. Upon completing his studies, he relocated to Florida where he taught drama at the Graham Eckes School from 1951 to 1954. He also taught at the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina from 1954 to 1956. Starnes then returned to school to pursue a Doctor of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama.
In 1960, Starnes served as Director of the Yale Dramatic Association while teaching at the Yale School of Drama. After separating from Yale University, he accepted a position in 1968 with the University of Pittsburgh where he worked as Director of the University Theatre until 1972.
Dr. Starnes arrived at Salisbury State College in the Fall of 1972 where he served as the Director of the Salisbury State Theatre until his death on May 14, 1980.
The Leland Starnes Papers consists mainly of production files created during his tenure as Director of the Salisbury State Theatre. The files include prompt scripts, notes, photographs, slides, digitized audio reels, cast lists, rehearsal schedules, stage designs, programs, sound plots, framed posters, sound recordings, and news clippings.
Also included in the collection are personal mementoes, organizational literature and a small amount of correspondence.
The design work in this collection, including floor plans, was created by Robert Cloyd.
Series 12 consists of accumulated playbills that do not relate to Salisbury University, but were collected by Starnes and his wife. These approximately 600 playbills date from 1921 to 2010 and originate from a variety of locations throughout the United States. Many famous film and theater actors and actresses first appeared in these productions before achieving notoriety. An inventory of the playbills, arranged alphabetically, is attached.
The collection also includes a video created by Leland’s son, Tim, and Gary Weber in 1989 entitled “SSC Theatre: The Starnes Years, 1972-1980.” The video was digitized from the VHS, although the master 1” tape is also in the collection.
The Leland Starnes Papers have been arranged chronologically and by production title.
