Abstract

The papers of E. Niel Carey collectively document his professional endeavors as an educator and facilitator of career education at the Maryland State Board of Education and the National Council on Career Advancement, 1967-1997. Records include his service in the United States Air Force; however, the majority of materials focus on the development of career education as one of the first programs of its kind. Additionally, records document Carey’s publication activities and public service. A transcription of a 1783 letter written by Carey's ancestor is attached.

Biographical History

Emerson Niel Cary, (b. 1931), born on a farm in Pittsville, Maryland to Vaughn and Doris Carey; he received his education in the Wicomico County school system and initially began his post-secondary education at Maryland State Teachers College (Salisbury University) when he entered the United States Air Force in 1950. While serving, Carey was stationed with the 7551st Personnel Processing Squadron in Shaftesbury, Dorset, England, simultaneously he was able to continue his college education through the University of Maryland, Overseas program. Returning from service, Carey finished his Bachelors of Science in Education at Maryland State Teachers College and received a Master’s in Education from the University of Maryland, College Park and began his career as a math and science teacher for the Baltimore County school system. There, he met his wife, Helen Simmons Carey (b. 1935), whom he wed in 1958. Carey joined the Maryland State Department of Education in 1967 as the supervisor of vocational guidance and state coordinator of career education, developing statewide plans. In 1985, he became the executive director of the National Career Development Association in Washington, D.C. and simultaneously co-founded the American Association for Career Education. After retirement, Carey has continued philanthropic endeavors at his alma mater, endowing a scholarship in undergraduate education and the research room at the Nabb Research Center.

The papers of E. Niel Carey have been maintained in the original order in which they were placed by Niel Carey during the production and ultimate writing of his book, My Journey: From the Farm to the Classroom and Beyond. Records were removed from 3-ring binders and foldered; the box and folder listing reflects this arrangement.
