Abstract

The June Pettit collection documents the history of and hunting of wildfowl in Worcester County, Maryland through deeds, hunting licenses, photographs and film, offering insight into a century of life on Chincoteague Bay.

Biographical History

Biographical History: E. June Pettit is the daughter of Marion E. Pettit (1914-2001) and Dorothy A. Pettit (1916-2002) of Snow Hill, Maryland. She married G. Peter Karras, a longtime Director of Social Services for Wicomico County. The couple had a daughter, Andrea Karras Goldberg. Pettit inherited an interest in local history from her father, an award-winning essayist and a lifelong farmer in Worcester County.

Scope and Content Note

The June Pettit collection consists of manuscript materials, photographs, film and artifacts documenting the history of and the hunting of wildfowl in Worcester County, Maryland from 1877-1991, with the bulk of the records dating from 1930-1967. The collection includes copies of a film of the Figgs, Wagner and Kouwenhoven families, and photocopies of the deeds to the Wagner and Kouwenhoven hunting lodges from 1930. It also includes a map of Snow Hill, Maryland from 1877 and a draft of an essay by Marion E. Pettit. Entitled “Colonel John Gunby,” the essay won the Eastern Shore Society of Baltimore’s historical essay contest in 1931.
