The Carey Church records contains information pertaining to the pastors and members of the Gumboro Circuit Parsonage in Delaware. The majority of the records detail baptisms, probationers, marriages that took place at the church from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. An alphabetical list of church members and a chronological list of pastors dating from 1883 – 1982 is present in the collection.

The Gumboro Circuit Parsonage had one of its first pastors in 1883 and was located in Gumboro, Delaware. In 1899, the church found a new parcel of land to relocate its buildings to and did so with local aid. The preacher in charge of the church during the time of the move, George A. Bowman, obtained permission for the relocation in 1898 at a conference held at nearby Carey’s Camp in Millsboro, Delaware. The records of this collection denote the pastors’ names from 1883 to 1982. Gumboro United Methodist Church still stands as a working church in Gumboro, Delaware. Carey’s Church and Carey’s Camp are also still in use, with Carey’s Camp being placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

This digital collection includes records surrounding Carey’s Church in Millsboro, Delaware and the Gumboro Circuit Methodist Church in Gumboro, Delaware. The collection consists of photocopies of a ledger that contained the church’s information, such as baptisms, marriages, and members of the church. These records include names, date of events, and date of births in the event of a baptism. “Transfer of Church Membership” and “Notice of Enrollment” forms are also located in this collection as well as a memoir of one of the pastors of the church that has been transcribed.
