Abstract

The Robert W. Tunnell papers consist of genealogical research of the Tunnell family from Frankford, Sussex County, Delaware, 1871-1995, with the bulk of the material dating from 1954-1969. Materials were collected by, Robert Tunnell, and include a sample of fiscal documentation of the Delaware State Committee, and historical information about Sussex County. Records also include family photographs, newspaper clippings, and general information about the state of Delaware.

Biographical History

Robert White Tunnell was born on July 21, 1914, in Frankford, Delaware.  Robert graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1932, he achieved his bachelor’s degree at Muskingum College and graduated from Duke Law School in 1941.  He served in the Army Judge Advocates office until 1946, returning home to begin his law practice Tunnell and Tunnell in Georgetown, Delaware where he worked until his retirement in 1981. He was highly active in the Sussex County community throughout his lifetime.  He served in various committees such as the Governor’s Revenue study committee and the Sussex Trust Company. Robert died on January 4, 2000; he was married to Eolyne Kelly Tunnell for 55 years and they had three children, a son, Robert White Tunnell Jr., and two daughters Ethel Paulyne and Bonney Tunnell.
