The Women’s Athletic Association was created to host athletic events for women attending the Maryland State Teachers College at Salisbury (now Salisbury University). This collection reflects events of the association via three large scrapbooks, photographs, score sheets, minutes, and administrative papers that date from 1953 to 1968. Such events included sports games, yearly banquets, and conferences not held in Salisbury.

The Women’s Athletic Association was created to host athletic events for women attending the Maryland State Teachers College at Salisbury (now Salisbury University). The Association organized basketball, volleyball, field hockey, and other athletic games for the college’s women to participate in. By 1964, the WAA Basketball team began to play other colleges in Maryland. Each year the Association would host a banquet in which Alumni would attend and awards for players would be distributed.

The Women’s Athletic Association contains photographs, minutes, score sheets, and administrative papers dating from 1953 to 1968. The collection contains three large scrapbooks that encompass the association’s activities from 1953 to 1971. Schedules, programs, photographs, newsletters, and newspaper clippings (such as wedding and association event announcements) of members and faculty associated with the association are present in the scrapbooks. A placemat and other memorabilia from the banquets are also located in the scrapbooks. Each scrapbook has a list of association presidents on the first page. Minutes in the collection include the association’s minutes from 1954 to 1968 and minutes from the 1964 MARFCW conference. There are also basketball score sheets dating from 1959 to 1968.

The Women’s Athletic Association collection has six series: (1) Minutes, (2) Administrative, (3) Basketball, (4) Volleyball, (5) Photographs and Scrapbooks, and (6) Conference and Conventions.

The first series, Minutes, includes the minutes of the association’s meetings from 1954-1968. Some minutes include member lists and attendance records. Executive board member lists are also present in some of the minutes.

Series two, Administrative, includes papers from the Association that detail certain aspects such as the bike rental system, awards points system, other miscellaneous WAA papers. This series also includes information and correspondence on the yearly banquets. Blank forms used by the WAA are also present.

The third series, Basketball, contains basketball team rosters, score sheets, and photographs of the basketball team. It also includes blank score sheets and reports on the basketball seasons.

Series four, Volleyball, contains blank volleyball score sheets and rules for volleyball players.

The fifth series, Photographs and Scrapbooks, includes some photographs of the teams and has three scrapbooks. The first scrapbook dates from 1953 to 1963. The second scrapbook dates from 1963 to 1969 and is the largest of the three scrapbooks. The third scrapbook dates from 1970 to 1971, but is not complete.

Series six, Conference and Conventions, include conference minutes from the 1964 MARFCW conference held at Camp Letts in Edgewater, Maryland. The series also includes travel information and pamphlets surrounding the 1967 ARFCW National Convention held in Madison, Wisconsin. Pamphlets from the ARFCW National Convention include pamphlets from other collegiate Women’s Athletic Associations.
