Abstract

The records of John H. Dulany and Son Incorporated, (also known Dulany and Johnson and Dulany and Sons), documents the growth and management of John H. Dulany and Son Inc. which was located in Fruitland Maryland. The materials date from the company’s inception in 1899 through 1984 with the bulk of the material dating from 1944-1966. The materials include photographs, correspondence, biographies, and awards documents the growth of the Dulany plants as well as business and political interests of the company. Biographies and photographs of Dulany family members and histories of the company are also included.

Administrative History

Beginning as a general store managed by Isaac Henry Anderson Dulany, John H. Dulany and Son Inc. was established in 1899 that both grew and preserved food. Upon its original founding, it was named Dulany & Johnson but the company was renamed when Johnson sold his shares of the company during the first two years.

In 1911, when Isaac Dulany passed his son, John H. Dulany took sole ownership of the company, at which point a new canning plant was constructed, expanding the business from tomato canning to wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Eventually, a plant for freezing strawberries was built in Norfolk, Virginia in 1920. John Dulany died in 1925, passing control of the company to his son, Ralph O. Dulany.

While under Ralph Dulany’s control, the company grew rapidly, and in 1937 Ralph Dulany was elected president of the National Canners Association. During World War II the importance of preserved foods was recognized by the government and Ralph Dulany and Dulany and Son Inc. received many awards due to their efforts in supplying the war effort.

Ralph Dulany also supported several religious and humanitarian causes, including the Wicomico County Civic Center and Rotary International, as well as youth sporting and service programs throughout his home community.
