Abstract

The papers of Blanche Williams Smith document her life as a resident and elementary educator of Maryland’s Eastern Shore from 1880-2015 with the bulk of the material dating from her years as a student at Frankford High School and the Women’s College at the University of Delaware, 1922-1931. Scrapbooks, created by her daughter Louise, document her family’s history dating back to the 1770s; other materials include yearbooks, journals and ephemera all-encompassing Blanche’s life Delaware and Maryland.

Biographical History

Blanche Avery Williams Smith (1908-2000) was born in Frankford, Delaware to Annie Elizabeth Williams, née Hudson and Albert Frank Williams. She received her education at the Frankford schools and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the Women’s College at the University of Delaware. Smith taught at a variety of elementary schools throughout the Eastern Shore region including Beaver Run, Pinehurst, and Fruitland. In 1931, she married William Martin Smith, a Wicomico County, Maryland farmer, and had two daughters, Lois and Louise.
