Abstract

The Wicomico Woman’s Club records documents the club’s administrative history and political activities in Wicomico County, Maryland dating from 1921-2009. The documents depict the club’s role in various social movements such as their support of Prohibition, film censorship, and their contribution to several anti-drug campaigns. Additionally, the organization’s many achievements are documented through a series of detailed, handmade scrapbooks dating from 1921-1990. Documents within the scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, photographs, ribbons, and correspondence. Administrative documents include meeting minutes, annual reports, bank statements, and treasury reports.

Administrative History

The Wicomico Woman’s Club was formed by 40 women in Salisbury, Maryland on February 3, 1921. The Club formed to promote civic betterment within Wicomico County. The club was active in various social and political movements such as Prohibition. Active during World War II, the Wicomico Woman’s Club volunteered with the Red Cross, the United States Organization (USO), and hosted Hygiene Classes for at-home mothers.  The club organized many beautification projects around Salisbury including a “Clean Up Week” in May of 1921 and the renovation of the Salisbury City Park Bandstand in 1981. Still active today, the Wicomico Woman’s Club continues to promote civic betterment through volunteer work and beautification projects.

Scope and Content Note

Series I. Administrative Records documents the legal, fiscal, and administrative history of the Wicomico Woman’s Club. Documents include meeting minutes, treasury books, bank statements and budget proposals.

Series II. Scrapbooks document the visual and ephemeric history of the Wicomico Woman’s Club through a series of handmade scrapbooks from the 1920s-1990s. Documents within the scrapbooks include photographs, newspaper clippings, ribbons, and correspondence.

The Wicomico Woman’s Club records have been arranged into two series, ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS and SCRAPBOOKS.

The physical arrangement of the collection mirrors the intellectual arrangement of the collection.
