Dr. Joan Maloof earned her B.S. in Plant Science at the University of Delaware, her M.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and her Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Maryland College Park before teaching Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies at Salisbury University. She retired in 2011 and earned the status of Professor Emeritus at Salisbury in 2012. Joan is an accomplished writer, having published numerous articles in acclaimed research journals and four books: Teaching the Trees (2005), Among the Ancients (2011), Nature's Temples: the Complex World of Old-Growth Forests (2016), and The Living Forest: A Visual Journey into the Heart of the Woods (2017). She married Rick Maloof, a well-known photographer, who passed away in 2010. She continues to work with plants as an ecologist and conservationist. In 2011, she established the Old-Growth Forest Network to protect forests across the United States. As the network continues to grow in protected forests and support, Joan travels and educates about the conditions and preservation of forests.
