Abstract

The family papers of Edward J. Henry document his family’s activities in Snow Hill, Maryland from his marriage to Mary Queen Purnell in 1887 through the death of his son William’s wife, Mary Holley Henry in 2009 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1932-1967. Materials include marriage certificates, funeral programs, ephemera about Helen and her violin as well as son William and Bowie State College, newspaper clippings and photographs.

Biographical History

Edward J. Henry (c.1862-1942) was born in Worcester County, Maryland and became a minister and prominent educator. He married Mary Queen Purnell (c.1871-1935), they had five children. Edward earned his Doctrine of Divinity from the Afro American School of Correspondence and was the pastor of the Mount Zion Baptist Church; wife, Mary Queen was a nurse-midwife. Their union in December 1887, produced five children, Mamie, Helen, Peter, William and Irving. Daughter, Helen (1893-1964) became an accomplished violinist and their son William E. (1900-1996) was the superintendent of colored schools in Worcester County and eventually became the President of Bowie State College.
