Abstract

This collection contains financial, personal, and business documents from the Whaley, Dale, and Watson families of the Eastern Shore from 1827-1944. This includes insurance papers, railroad receipts, letters, and bills from the Whaley and Dale family, as well as receipts and papers from Mrs. M. Pasha Watson’s funeral business. The collection also consists of several maps of Maryland and Delaware, dating 1901-2009.

Biographical History

Peter Walter Whaley was born on June 27, 1937. His father, Peter Whaley was born in Whaleyville, MD in 1910, the son of Walter Peter and Josephine Dale Whaley. Walter worked as a farmer and Josephine as the postmaster of Whaleyville. In 1932 Peter Whaley married Madeline Watson, the daughter of Mrs. Pasha Watson. Mrs. Pasha Watson, a funeral director, sent Peter and Madeline to the Eckels College of Embalming in Philadelphia. Peter became a funeral director and partner in the Watson and Whaley Funeral Home in Selbyville, DE. He was also a member of Doric Masonic Lodge in Millville, the Selbyville Rotary Club, and the Delmarva Coon Hunting Club.

Scope and Content Note

The Peter Whaley Collection contains financial, personal, and business papers from the Whaley, Dale, and Watson families of the Eastern Shore. This includes insurance papers, railroad receipts, ledgers, letters, and bills from the Whaley and Dale family, as well as receipts, documents, and catalogues from Mrs. M. Pasha Watson’s funeral business. These documents range from 1827 to 1944. The collection also consists of several maps of Maryland and Delaware, dating 1901-2009, including one prepared for the Delaware State Board of Education circa 1930.

Additionally, Peter W. Whaley included transcripts, descriptions, and additional genealogical information to accompany each of the Dale and Whaley family binders and ledgers. Whaley's genelogical information comes from The Geneaology of the Dale Family by Melanie Ayers Merryweather (1995).

Arrangement Statement

This collection has been divided into four series: Dale and Whaley Family Binders, Ledgers, Watson Papers, and Maps.

The binders have been carefully organized by Peter W. Whaley, and his original divider tabs are still present in several folders to help maintain this organization. Binder 1 includes property taxes, insurance, and IRS business from the Dale family. Binder 2 covers lumber and timber, animal sales and transcriptions, railroads express mail, registered letter receipts, stock from the Whaley and Dale families, and subscriptions. Binder 3 contains Eli and Josiah T. Dale’s papers. Binder 4 covers John M. Dale’s papers and Binder 5 contains Peter W. Dale’s Papers. The additional binders include nonfamily members estates administered by Dales or Whaleys, local and national bills and receipts, stubs from Salisbury National Bank Check Book, and Samuel Davis’ Papers.

Jan. 18 1910 Letter 3 pages J. B. Dale to Walter P. Whaley. "Gully' boundaries with J. B. Dale property. The

"Guelly" was a part of the original land grant to the Dales by Lord Baltimore. This grant was split up

between Dale family children. The Gully probably inherited by Harry P. Dale. His land was bought

by Walter & Josephine Dale Whaley (Harry P. Dale's sister)y at H. P. Dale's tax sale.

Jan. 18 1912 Letter to Walter P. Whaley from E. J. Thomas Walter found evidence 1910 tax was paid. Hope no

Eli Dale was the 3rd child of Jesse and Rhoda Dale. Eli Dale lived 6/16/1796 - 10/15/1853. He first marriage 9/9/1834 was to Hannah Tull. Their children were Josiah Tull Dale, James Simpson Dale, and John Byard Dale. His second

marriage was to Nancy Hearn 10/2/1807-1/11/1850. They had two children Rhoda Jane Dale 9/21/1846 death date not known and Charles Showell Dale 1/5/1850 - 3/16/1922. Eli outlived his two wives. This information is from Genealogy of The Dale Family 1995 by Melanie Ayres Merryweather. Eli’s first cousin John M. Dale, & Eli’s oldest son Josiah T. Dale became the administrators of Eli Dales estate but Josiah Tull Dale died before his father’s estate was settled., John M. Dale became the administrator for Eli’s and Josiah’s estates. He filed distribution papers for Eli’s children and as a guardian John M. Dale filed papers in Orphans Court for Eli Dale’s three younger children. James S. Dale, John B. Dale, Rhoda J. The Dale family connection to Samuel Davis is listed in “The Genealogy of the Dale family”, 1995 by Melanie Ayers Merryweather on p. 11 Under Charles W. Davis 1.2, John M. Dale’s youngest daughter (Hetty Dale) married George Baker. Their second child Charles W. Davis was a great grandson of John M. Dale. Charles W. Davis married Sarah Ellen Wheeler who was the daughter of Samuel Davis. I do not know if Samuel and Charles Davis were related. It appears John M. Dale helped a distant in law Martha Davis in the settling of Samuel Davis’s estate. I cannot find any reference that Martha Davis is a direct Dale relative. Constable’s sale for Eli Davis forum with Julia T. Marshall papers but put with the Davis papers

white, Back cover list all farmers and their ledger page number, starting on page 67 farmers are grouped

by general farm location, lbs. produced, seed costs and amounts paid each farmer by check: farm

locations Gumboro, DE., Berlin MD., Whaleyville, MD., Pittsville MD. Ledger had a note to Dear Folks but it

was not signed. Ledger mentions Smith and Calloway and Chestertown where the check book for all the

payments were sent.

A description of cucumber activity written in 2015 from childhood memories by Peter W. Whaley grandson

of Walter Peter & Josephine Dale Whaley

My name is Peter Walter Whaley and I am the oldest of the grandchildren of Walter Peter and Josephine Dale Whaley. I was born on 27 June 1937. My grandparents lived in Whaleyville, MD. and I lived about six miles away in Selbyville, DE. As a young child I often spent the night at my grandparents home. My grandmother was the postmaster of Whaleyville. The post office was located on Sheppard's Crossing Road at the lane that led up to their farm house. My grandfather was a farmer, cut timber and was a broker for Strawberries, Tomatoes, Peppers and Cucumbers. A lot of open space existed behind and to the side of grandparent’s home and in front of the other farm buildings. This space accommodated parking for delivery of product by truck or wagons, sorting, and loading of other vehicles to transport these products to market. The activity associated with the shipping of Strawberries, Tomatoes and Peppers presented a possible safety problem for a young child to be in the yard. With Cucumbers this was not the case. Thus I remember details about the cucumber business but very few details about the other farm products. Cucumbers were sorted by hand after they were dumped onto a sorting table. A child could sit on the sorting table and not pose a potential problem with the other activity. Helping with the sorting was really big stuff for a five-year old boy.

The sorting table was an inclined raised rectangle with the lower ends tapering to an opening that was blocked by a vertical piece of wood. Different sized slots were cut in the sides of the table into which cucumbers were placed to determine their diameter and then dropped into a basket below the slot. Sorters stood at the sides of the table. The smallest diameter cucumbers were called #1. They commanded the highest price and were the cucumbers that would be used to make the smallest sweet pickles. Larger sizes were called # 2 or # 3 and # 4s commanded a lower price. The #2 were usually pickled whole while # 3 could be sliced to make round bread and butter pickles or pickled whole as dill pickles. The largest cucumbers #4,s ended up at the end of the sloped table and the board was raised to let them drop into a basket. The large cucumbers received the lowest price. They were used to make the elongated sliced dilled pickles.

A pickle maker contracture with a broker to buy Cucumbers. One of the pickle makers my grandfather contracted with was named Rothman whose pickle plant was in Philadelphia. Farmers contracted with the broker and were advanced the price of cucumber seeds. This advance was recovered from the sale of the delivered cucumbers as they were harvested. This 1942 pickle ledger is a record for the farmers and their production for the 1942 cucumber season.
