Abstract

This scrapbook was collected by Jane Webb, co-founder of the Peace Action Committee (PAX) in Massachusetts, who traveled with the Committee for International Friendly Visits to the Soviet Union several times at the height of the Cold War between 1969 and 2003.

Scope and Content Note

Jane  Webb  was  a  Harvard-educated  mother  who  helped  lead  the  Massachusetts  Peace  Action  Committee  and  organize  the  1969  Moratorium  to  End  the  War  in  Vietnam.  In  1969  and  1974,  the  Soviet  Women’s  Committee,  a  Russian  women’s  group  that  had  established  relationships  with  the  Committee  for  International  Friendly  Visits,  invited  Webb  and  three  other  women  to  tour  the  Soviet  Union.  During  these  Cold  War-era  visits,  the  group  met  with  dignitaries  in  the  Russian  cities  of  Moscow  and  Leningrad,  Riga  in  Latvia,  and  Kiev  in  Ukraine.  Throughout  her  tours,  Webb  collected  ephemera,  took  photographs,  and  wrote  extensive  notes  on  Soviet  people  and  culture.
