The Delmarva Poultry Industry, Inc. records are comprised of material related to the Delmarva Chicken Festival and the poultry industry from 1926-2017 (with the bulk of the material dating from 1948-2004), as well as the predecessor and related organizations: Delaware State Poultry Commission and Eastern Shore Poultry Growers Exchange. In addition to the festival records, newspaper clippings related to the mission and vision of the industry document one of the Delmarva Peninsula’s most significant industries through a series of ephemera, photographs and scrapbooks. This collection highlights the impact of the Delmarva Poultry Industry; while revealing the unique characteristics of the festival, for example the large frying displayed yearly at the festival.
The Delmarva Peninsula is home to one of the largest poultry industries in the world. By the 1920s, the demand for chicken grown solely for consumption began to escalate. Broiler chickens were raised in large quantities which made them readily available to serve the needs of surrounding large cities. In the mid-twentieth century, farmers realized the need for a centralized body to represent chicken growers. J. Frank Gordy was a poultry specialist at the University of Delaware. He worked tirelessly to unify and regulate the Delmarva Chicken Industry. Gordy’s efforts lead to the creation of The Delmarva Poultry Industry, Inc. (DPII). DPII affords farmers a marketplace to sell products from feed to eggs also to promote the growth of the industry.
The broiler industry was not just a business; it was a way of life for some poultry men. In June of 1948, chicken growers held the first Delmarva Chicken Festival in Easton, Maryland. J. Frank Gordy felt that a contest and festival would appeal to national buyers. The Delmarva Chicken Festival far exceeded Gordy’s initial intent. The festival brought in large crowds every year and became a national attraction. There were numerous events ranging from a chicken cooking contest to a beauty pageant. In 1950, the festival became the home to the world’s largest frying pan. Not only did the festival provide entertainment, it educated poultry men about the trends in the chicken industry and disseminated regulations for the health of chickens and established standards for the industry.
The Delmarva Chicken Festival brought national attention to the industry. In 1957, the Washington Post published an article about President Eisenhower’s favorite chicken recipe. The article stated that the recipe came from a Maryland housewife and included a Delmarva Broiler. The last Delmarva Chicken Festival was held in 2014. DPII shifted its focus from the festival to preserving and sustaining the poultry industry in the twenty-first century.
The Delmarva Poultry Industry, Inc. records have been arranged into three series: DELMARVA POULTRY FESTIVAL and NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS and ASSOCIATED ORGANIZATIONS.
The Delmarva Poultry Festival documents the festival’s activities through a series of photographs, posters and ephemera. The Newspaper Clippings series is a comprehensive documentation of the poultry industry from its inception through a series of newsprint articles from various news outlets across the mid-Atlantic.
Associated organizations include: Delaware Poultry Improvement Association, Delaware State Poultry Commission, and Eastern Shore Poultry Growers Exchange.
