Abstract

Trinity United Methodist Episcopal Church, South records document the congregational activities of the church 1880-2014. Quarterly conference meeting minutes and pastor’s reports on the church’s activities support the church registers, which include marriage, baptismal, and membership records. Oral histories of parishioners and pastors also document the long-standing Salisbury, Maryland church.

Administrative History

Southern Methodism was brought to the Eastern Shore a year after the close of the Civil War when eight men withdrew from the Methodist Episcopal Church. This action set into motion the establishment of Trinity Church; a congregation was organized in 1866. A modest wooden structure was built and a pastor, the Reverend Dr. M. Lecato, was obtained. Regular worship services began with the eight founding members. Within the year the congregation grew to 33. The church continued to grow and by 1885, the congregation had more than doubled to 77 members. Fire struck Trinity Church on three occasions, first in 1885 with the structure quickly rebuilt only to be reduced to ashes by the Great Salisbury Fire in 1886. The Trinity congregation was not discouraged by the fire; they continued their worship services for a time in the Salisbury Court House as well as in the Presbyterian Auditorium. A third building was completed in 1887, which would eventually become the home of St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church. Governor Elihu E. Jackson and his wife, the former Margaret Anne Rider, became Trinity’s benefactors, donating the funding for the present church located at the corner of Division and High Street. It was dedicated on May 21, 1905. Trinity endured its last significant ordeal in 1940, when again fire severely damaged the interior; nonetheless, the interior was fully restored. When the unification of Methodism came in 1939, Trinity was the northernmost appointment in the old Southern Methodist Church. In September 1970, the Trinity Administrative Board officially changed the name from Trinity Methodist Church, South to Trinity United Methodist Church of Salisbury, Maryland. Today Trinity has over 1,200 members and is one of the largest congregations on the Eastern Shore.
