Abstract

The Harold S. Morton, Jr., papers document the extensive family history research that Morton conducted with the help of his wife, Margaret James Morton from 1958-1978 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, primarily in Northampton County. Families documented via research include James, Roberts and Stott. The materials date from 1870-1978, 1996 and include primary resources documenting the James family’s activities in and around Franktown, Virginia. Resources include land deeds, military discharge papers and estate assessment for Robert Dunton James.

Biographical History

Harold S. Morton Jr., (1924-1994) was born in Minnesota and earned his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Virginia (U Va.) in 1953 and joined the mechanical engineering faculty in 1962. While at U Va. Morton met and married Margaret E. James (1923-2011), originally from Nassawadox, Virginia, she was the third woman to receive a degree from U Va. in a field other than nursing or education. They had four children.

Scope and Content Note

Series I: Family History Research, 1958-1978, documents the extensive research conducted by Harold S. and Margaret J. Morton on their descendants from the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Series II: Primary Resources, 1850-1996, includes original documents created by Morton family descendants and Margaret J. Morton.
