Abstract

This collection contains correspondence, plans, and pilot information regarding Tangier Island’s holiday Holly Run from the years 1971 to 2009.

Administrative History

Tangier is a small island located 12 miles off the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The Holly Run originated in 1968 when lawyer and Cambridge native Edward H. Nabb flew to the region and noticed the island did not have holly trees to decorate for the Christmas holiday. Despite being a pious religious community the island took Nabb’s offer of flying holly to Tangier for the holidays, and created an event supported by many other pilots of the region, as well as hosting a Santa Claus gift giving event for the community’s children. 2002 was the first Edward H. Nabb Sr memorial Holly Run following his passing earlier that year. The tradition of the Holly Run still occurs on Tangier Island, only having been cancelled twice in its history.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains correspondence, plans, and pilot information regarding Tangier Island’s holiday Holly Run from the years 1971 to 2009. The collection documents Edward H. Nabb Jr’s records and planning for the event and his perspective of the Holly Run’s history which was addded to the Island’s event website. Faxes and letters in the collection describe the planning and search for pilots, address lists and notes of the Maryland and Virginia region, and aviation booklets focused on airport resources. Publications in the collection include articles written by pilots who participated in the Holly Run, as well as those who captured the event for local newspapers. Plane inventories, event stickers, as well as photos from a Holly Run event in 1971 are also included.
