Abstract

The George Whitehead papers document his involvement in public education, philanthropy and volunteerism on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland from 1980-2014 with the bulk of the materials dating from 1990-2014. Dr. Whitehead’s work with the Maryland Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism, Phi Delta Kappa and the American Red Cross is documented through correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports and ephemera.

Biographical History

Born November 13, 1945, George Whitehead, Ph.D. is a Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Trinity College, Hartford in 1967, a Master of Arts in Psychology from Long Island University, CW Post Campus in 1969 and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1973. He was a professor of psychology at Salisbury University from 1972 to 2016, the founder of the Institute of Service Learning and the President of Phi Delta Kappa, Eastern Shore Chapter. He was a member of the Maryland Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, the Wicomico County Board of Education, and the Eastern Shore Advisory Council of the Maryland Mentoring Partnership. He served as the Chairman of the Lower Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross and the President of the Board of Directors of Maple Shade Residential Homes, assisting children and adolescents with behavioral problems.
