The Richard Cooper papers document his professional and personal activities through his collection of materials dating from 1605 to 2001. The documents focus on the religious and political histories of Wicomico and Worcester County as well as the history of the Mason-Dixon Boundary Line depicted through Cooper’s column in the Daily Times. The papers also document the topographic history of Delmarva through Cooper’s career as an engineering surveyor. Documents from his surveying career and interests include topographic maps, survey certificates, land deeds, and plats. A photograph album documents the construction of his family home at 611 Tony Tank Lane in Salisbury, Maryland. Materials within the collection include newspaper clippings, photographs, family histories, and correspondence. Drafts and manuscripts of Cooper’s published works on the history of Salisbury, Profile of a Colonial Community, Salisbury in Times Gone By, and Portrait of Salisbury are contained within the collection.
Richard Waller Cooper Sr., (1913-2003) was born in Salisbury, Maryland to Franklin K. and Lucy V. Cooper. He graduated from Wicomico High School in 1931 and the University of Maryland in 1935. Cooper worked for the city of Salisbury until 1943 when he served in the military during World War II. Cooper was a surveyor for fifty years after starting his own business Richard W. Cooper Engineering Surveys in 1945. Cooper later became a well-known author and columnist for the Daily Times and an avid historian of the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Cooper published several histories of Salisbury including, Profiles of a Colonial Community on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Salisbury in Times Gone By, and Portrait of Salisbury. Richard Waller Cooper married Constance Cooper (1912-2003) in the late 1930s and had three sons, Franklin Kent, (b.1945) Jonathan, (b.1950s) and Richard Waller Cooper Jr., (1942-1972) and a daughter, Constance Saxton (b.1940).
The Richard Cooper papers have been arranged into sixteen series, DAILY TIMES, ARTICLES AND MANUSCRIPTS, CIVIL WAR, SUBJECT FILES, MARYLAND/DELAWARE LINE, GREEN HILL CHURCH, FAMILY AND PERSONAL, CHURCH AND FAMILIES, SURVEYING AND PERSONAL CLIPPINGS, EASTERN SHORE LIFE, LAND RECORDS, SURVEYING INFORMATION, EPHEMERA, AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS, LEGAL RECORDS and OVERSIZE MATERIALS.
Daily Times series documents the research and articles written by Richard W. Cooper for the Salisbury Daily Times. It is further subdivided into five subseries, General, Traffic, City Government, Early Articles, and Camden Drainage Problems. The General subseries documents general articles written by Cooper for the Daily Times and includes subjects such as baseball, weather and storms, and Salisbury’s Main Street. The Traffic subseries documents research and articles about Route 13, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and Route 13. The Traffic subseries includes traffic reports, article drafts, and newspaper clippings. The City Government subseries documents research regarding the history of Salisbury’s city government and includes newspaper clippings and correspondence. The Early Articles subseries documents articles written early in Cooper’s career with the Daily Times. Subjects include the history and changing aesthetic of Salisbury. The Camden Drainage Problems subseries documents the research and articles written by Cooper regarding the floods in the Camden District of Salisbury in 1995.
Articles and Manuscripts series documents articles written by Richard W. Cooper on various subjects. The series is further subdivided into two subseries, General and Maryland Surveyor. The General subseries documents research Cooper acquired when writing articles on subjects such as, the Humphreys family and the Masonic Temple of Salisbury. The Maryland Surveyor subseries documents articles Cooper wrote for the surveying magazine, the Maryland Surveyor in 1993-1995 as well as correspondence with authors of the Maryland Surveyor.
Civil War series documents the history of the Civil War of the United States from 1861-1865. The series is further divided into three subseries, Booklets and Magazines, Manuscripts, and Correspondence. The Booklets and Magazines subseries includes booklets and magazines relating to Civil War history, such as sanitation measures. The Manuscripts subseries documents manuscripts written on Civil War history by Richard W. Cooper and Millard G. Les Callette. The Correspondence subseries documents correspondence between Richard W. Cooper and various institutions such as, the Board of Education and the Civil War Roundtable regarding speaking engagements on the Civil War.
Subject Files series documents various files maintained by Richard W. Cooper on a variety of people, places, and subjects related to Delmarva. Each file may contain a variety of material on different subjects, such as the John Brinkley, the Camden Historic District, and the Salisbury Fire of 1886. Subject files are listed alphabetically in the finding aid and include newspaper clippings, photographs, and articles written by Richard W. Cooper.
Maryland/Delaware Line series documents the history of the Maryland Delaware boundary line, including information on the line’s creators Mason and Dixon. Documents within this series include newspaper articles, manuscripts, plats, and maps.
Green Hill Church series documents the history of the Old Green Hill Church and John Huett, the Church’s first minister. The series documents the activities of the Green Hill Preservation Committee and their fundraiser for a commemorative plaque for Reverend John Huett. This series also includes a manuscript of The Whitehaven Connection, written by Richard W. Cooper, detailing the life and work of John Huett and his home in Whitehaven, Maryland. The series includes newspaper articles, photographs, correspondence, meeting minutes, and inventories.
Family and Personal series documents the family and personal life of Richard W. Cooper through a series of photographs.
Church and Families series documents the Green Hill Church’s John Huett plaque fundraiser. The series also documents the Davis and Dashiell families of the Eastern Shore and their connection to the Green Hill Church. The series also includes documents regarding the repairs and preservation of the Green Hill Church. Documents include correspondence, meeting minutes, photographs, family histories, and newspaper articles.
Surveying and Personal Clippings series documents Cooper’s surveying career and interest in surveying instruments such as the Goldsmith Chandlee Surveying Compass. The series also documents Cooper’s achievements in surveying through certificates and award ceremonies. Documents within this series include photographs, correspondence, deeds, plats, certificates, and newspaper clippings. The series also includes a manuscript for Cooper’s published work Salisbury in Times Gone By and advertisements for Profile of a Colonial Community.
Eastern Shore Life series documents events within Salisbury’s history, such as a World War II event in the 1940s and the Bicentennial Celebration in 1936. Documents in this series include booklets, photographs, and souvenir programs.
Land Records series documents Richard W. Cooper’s personal collection of various land records from Wicomico, Somerset, Worcester, Sussex, and Dorchester counties. Documents include deeds, plats, bonds, survey certificates, land warrants, and survey maps.
Surveying Information series documents the history and use of survey instruments such as the Goldsmith Chandlee Surveying Compass. Documents include photographs of Cooper’s survey instruments and internet articles pertaining to the history of survey instruments.
Ephemera series documents various printed materials such as programs and booklets on various subjects such as surveying and cookbooks from Salisbury, Maryland.
Audio-Visual Materials series includes photographs and daguerreotypes of Cooper’s ancestors and a VHS tape of Scorchey’s Corner from 1995.
Legal Records series documents legal records from families within Wicomico and Worcester County dating from 1789-1923. Documents include plats, survey certificates, and deeds.
Oversize Materials series documents oversize materials of varying subjects such as Eastern Shore history and Cooper’s personal accolades. Documents within the series include indentures, survey certificates, Maryland Surveyor certificates, and maps.
