The Lynn Perry papers document his military service as an officer in the American Expeditionary Forces and a Lieutenant Corporal in World War II, as well as his personal interests in genealogy, the Mason-Dixon Boundary Line, and the Civil War with materials dating from 1880-1960, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1910-1945. Materials within the collection include his diary and a series of photographs from World War I, a World War II scrapbook documenting his work during a top secret mission in Alaska. In addition to the military service of Lynn Perry, his papers also include a scrapbook documenting Margaret Perry’s political career as President of the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women.
Dr. Lynn Perry (1884-1969) was born in Millsboro, Delaware to parents Vandalia and Rose May Perry. Perry received his Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1906 and 1907, respectively. Perry held various engineering occupations in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey before joining the Army in 1918. During the First World War, Perry served as First Lieutenant, Captain, and Sanitary Engineer with the American Expeditionary Force in France and Germany from July 1918 to December 1919. After serving in the war, Perry taught Civil Engineering as a professor at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania from 1919 to 1942. In 1942, Perry served in World War II as a Lieutenant Corporal in the Corps of Engineers. Stationed in Alaska, Perry served with the 349th Engineer Register on a road-building project. After serving in World War II, Perry moved to Coral Gables, Florida where he worked as Designer Engineer for the City of Miami’s Department of Water and Sewers until his retirement in the 1950s. Lynn Perry married Margaret Lavinia Perry of New Jersey (1883-1966) in the 1910s before Lynn was stationed overseas. They had one child together, Elizabeth Perry Thayer (b.1930s).
Margaret Lavinia Perry, (1883-1966) a New Jersey native, was a staunch supporter of women’s voting rights. Perry was elected as the civics department director of the Women’s Club of Easton, Pennsylvania in 1926 where she helped the Women’s Club receive their own voting machine for the upcoming Women’s Club elections. While acting as director of the Women’s Club, Perry also helped with a children’s diphtheria clinic. Throughout the latter half of the 1920s, Perry was elected as the President of the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women (PFDW) three times. As President of the PFDW, Perry presided over annual conventions and held elections on issues such as the eighteenth amendment. Perry also served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross Chapter of Pennsylvania during the World War II. Margaret married Lynn Perry in the 1910s and had one child, Elizabeth Perry Thayer (b.1930s).
