The Clyde Gilbert Truitt collection includes numerous photographs, documents, newspaper clippings, and handwritten information cards detailing Clyde G. Truitt’s military service in World War I. Other local men’s military careers are also included in this collection, but the main focus of the collection is on Clyde Truitt. Information surrounding Clyde’s family is present in the collection. Documents pertaining to Truitt’s family include birth certificates, wedding announcements, report cards, and other genealogical documents. A vast majority of the collection is made up of photographs. Half of the photographs detail Truitt’s military experience, while the other half depict the Truitt family, the Truitt family home, and Clyde’s career with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company.
Clyde Gilbert Truitt was born in Salisbury, Maryland on April 29, 1888 to John and Mary Elizabeth Truitt. Truitt served as a Sergeant in the Maryland National Guard Company I and the U.S. Army, Company I, 115th Infantry, Center Sector in Meuse-Argonne, France from June 15, 1918 to May 24, 1919. Truitt became a Private on August 10, 1918 and a Sergeant on October 6, 1918. He was honorably discharged on June 6, 1919.
After the war, Truitt was a commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 194 and a district commander of the VFW. He worked for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company.
Truitt married Grace Perry and together had four daughters: Mary Rosalie, Margaret F., Martha Ray, and Grace C. Truitt’s daughter, Mary Rosalie, married James Thomas Wootten and together had James Wootten. Clyde Truitt died on April 15, 1961 and was survived by his wife and children.
While the collection includes discharge papers and other publications, the digital component of the collection includes photographs, report cards, wedding announcements, birth certificates, obituaries, handwritten military records, and other genealogical documents surrounding Clyde Gilbert Truitt’s World War I experience and family history. The bulk of materials depicts Truitt’s time in the military from 1916 to 1919. Parts of the collection were handwritten and detail the military careers of other men from Salisbury who fought in World War I. Photographs throughout the collection depict locations that Truitt’s company visited, such as Eagle Pass, Texas as well as the unit leaving Salisbury. Recent newspaper clippings that mention Truitt’s unit are present in the collection and are from the 2000s. A letter to Grace Perry is also included in the collection along with some postcards. The documents pertaining to Truitt’s family include items surrounding his daughter, Mary, and her husband and son, James and Thomas respectively. Among these documents are military records pertaining to James and Thomas’ military careers in World War II. Photographs in the collection that depict World War II showcase Holland, France, and Germany in 1944 and 1945. Other photographs and materials depicting Truitt and his family’s life in Salisbury, Maryland are present. These materials are mainly from the early 1900s, but later materials, such as Truitt’s obituary from 1982, are also present.
The loaned component of the Clyde Gilbert Truitt collection has been digitized and kept in original order. 2012.015.078 was digitized when the collection was on loan previously in 2012, but was not re-digitized in 2018. Some items were digitized and given two identifiers, the second instance of the document relates the first instance’s identifier.
