The Horsley collection is primarily composed of materials collected, copied, and transcribed by Horsley as a product of her research on Pemberton Plantation, located just outside of Salisbury on the Eastern Shore. Notebooks, genealogy charts, research papers, newspaper clippings, duplications of maps from Maryland’s Colonial period to the present, as well as a personal “vertical file” of information relating to area historical sites, events, and peninsula history, are united to compose a collection of personal papers reflecting Horsley’s interests and life’s work. Horsley’s papers will be of interest to those seeking guidance to primary source materials relating to Pemberton plantation (three miles from Salisbury), and its chain of ownership within the Handy family; her extreme diligence in recording her sources and compiling her transcriptions makes this an excellent starting point for unseasoned researchers of Somerset County. The bulk of Horsley’s research was conducted in the 1980's.
Lucile H. Horsley was born July 13, 1914 to Mr. and Mrs. Grover Cleveland Hamilton in Franktown, Va. She was one of three children, having two sisters, Gertrude (Pearson) and Nancy (LeCato). She received her BA from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia and a Master in Librarianship from George Peabody University in Nashville, Tennesse. On June 23, 1943, Lucile was married to Fred Horsley and both took up residence in Salisbury, Md. From 1947 to 1949 Horsley worked as a libraian at Wicomico High School. In 1949 she joined the Wicomico county library system as a cataloguer and in 1950 she was named administrator of the Wicomico County Free Library, which had become headquarters for the Eastern Shore regional Library and the Maryland Materials System. She held this position until her retirement in 1978. A historian, Horsley performed extensive research on Salisbury history, Pemberton genealogy and was instrumental in assembling the Maryland Room collection found at the Wicomico Library.
Series I: Notebooks, Horsley’s notebooks contain transcriptions, notes from books and essays, references to the Maryland Hall of Records, the Delmarva Archives, published guides, and newspapers. They document the steps Horsley took in performing her research on Pemberton and the families associated with it.
Series II: Genealogies, This series is composed of family charts Horsley constructed on a number of Peninsula families (Handy, Dashiell, etc.) and contains references to where she found her primary source materials. This series also contains “summary” information prepared by Horsley on what she had found.
Series III: Records Transcribed for Genealogy, This series, somewhat overlapping with Series II in content, contains photocopies and transcriptions of primary source materials used by Horsley to compile genealogies.
Series IV: Pemberton, Contains a history of Pemberton Hall and the property it was constructed on, as well as information on Pemberton obtained from the Wicomico County Free Library in Salisbury and a rough floorplan.
Series V: Land Records: Plats, Land Petitions, Patents, and Unpatented Certificates of Survey, Contains copies of plats taken from surveys, a land petition filed by Isaac Handy in 1730, copies of patents for a selection of land parcels of interest to Horsley and an unpatented certificate of survey of Robert Lemmon’s.
Series VI: Trial Papers, Trial papers relating to His Lordship vs. Isaac Handy (1745-1746), John McCuddy against Christopher Dominick Jackson (1741), and agreement between Jane Ker and Edward Horsey (1805) and Robert Lemmon vs. George Parsons (1814).
Series VII: Wills, Wills of selected individuals appearing in Horsley’s genealogies.
Series VIII: Misc. Records, Contains Somerset tax lists, land grants, shipping records, Horsleys’ transcription notes on the rent roll of 1744, photocopies of rent rolls and information on marriages in Worcester County 1795-1865. The Center has not separated each record type into a separate series as the material falling into these categories is not extensive.
Series IX: Collected Genealogies, Genealogies that Horsley retained copies of that she herself did not generate.
Series X: Print Materials, Publications owned by Horsley which relate to Eastern Shore genealogy, history, architecture. Includes published inventories and a guide to genealogical research in Maryland.
Series XI: Promotional Material, Contains “non-book” material such as postcards and a schedule to a Sequi-Bicentennial celebration in Salisbury.
Series XII: Photographs, Photographs taken in 1980 of Handy Hall, Hitch House, Pemberton Hall.
Series XIII: Finding Aids, Finding aids retained by Horsley to sources she used in her research.
Series XIV: Pemberton News (Newsletter), A quarterly newsletter of the Pemberton Hall Foundation. Issues from July 1980 to January/April 1996. Horsley was not involved with Pemberton News, only a subscriber.
Series XV: Essays, Contains one essay from the Journal of Economic and Business History, v. 2 (1929-1930) entitled, “Anthony Bacon, M. P., an Eighteenth Century Merchant,” by L. B. Namier.
Series XVI: Maps, Contains photocopies of maps from all stages of Maryland’s development (e.g. Salisbury maps from the 19th century), including some contemporary, late twentieth century maps.
Series XVII: Vertical File, An assortment of newspaper clippings, magazine clippings and brochures relating to historic sites on the Delmarva Peninsula; miscellaneous information on genealogy, genealogical sources, and articles pertaining to the history of the Delmarva Penisula.
Series XVIII: Research Status Reports, Details Horsley’s research results as of 1985.
Series XIX: Horsley Research Reports, Reports put together by Horsley organized around particular topics researched. Includes discussions of Somerset properties, senatorial and congressional candidates, and research notes on inventories.
Series XX: Research Reports, Reports not generated by Horsley retained for reference purposes. Topics include Wicomico County, Presbyterianism in Wicomico, and colonial economy in Maryland.
Series XXI: Newspapers, Contains Newspapers from Wicomico County’s Centennial Edition of the Daily Times, 1967 and three copies of the Daily Times’ Supplement celebrating Salisbury's Sesqui-Bicentennial in 1982.
Series XXII: Scrapbooks, Horsley’s scrapbooks dating from around 1931 to 1967. Contains newspaper articles documenting Eastern Shore life during this period.
