This collection contains research notes, surveys, hand-drawn architectural drawings and photographs created by architectural historian Michael Owen Bourne for historic home restorations and renovations between 1960 and 2020. His projects were mainly on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, as well as Delaware, and Virginia. However, there are some materials from projects in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The majority of the collection dates from 1968 to 2009 and the materials range from his time working for the Historical Maryland Trust (1967-1973 and 1995-2000), as well as his own company (1973-1995), and the Department of Architectural Research at Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (2000-2003). Bourne's architectural papers related to Kent County, Maryland are located at the Historical Society of Kent County (the Nabb Center collection includes papers for all projects located outside of Kent County, Maryland).
Born in 1937, Michael Owen Bourne grew up in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland and later married Ann Atwater in 1979, with whom he had two children, Mark and Sarah. Bourne attended Discalced Carmelite Seminary in Brookline, MA and Peterborough, NH to become a priest; however, he left the monastery and earned his Bachelor of Arts for Architectural History from the University of Detroit. In 1967, he started work for the Maryland Historical Trust as a surveyor of historic sites. In 1973, Bourne went into business for himself as an architectural restoration consultant. From 1973 to 1995, he worked with the Historic District Commission of Chestertown and other private clients, and restored more than 100 houses throughout the Chesapeake region. He was a member of both the British-based Vernacular Architecture Group and the American Vernacular Architecture Forum. In 1995, he returned to work for the Maryland Historical Trust and, in 1998, he wrote the book Historic Houses of Kent County. In 2000, he was asked to join the Department of Architectural Research at Colonial Williamsburg as an architectural historian, a contract position that lasted through 2003 after which he returned to his private consultation business. Bourne's last project before retirement was the significant restoration of Cloverfield, Queen Anne’s County. Michael Bourne died on June 5, 2022.
This collection contains Michael Owen Bourne’s research notes, architectural drawings (all hand-drawn), correspondence, photographs, and consultations on roughly 250 historic structures across Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. The collection documents Bourne's architectural work from 1960 to 2020, with the majority of materials dating from 1968 to 2009. Most of the research notes describe the history of each building. The consultations are split between advice for restorations and renovations and assistance registering buildings on the National Register. While most projects include extensive documentation, there are some files that only contain a small amount of materials. The majority of Bourne’s projects were located throughout, but not limited to, the Eastern Shore of Maryland and include the counties of Caroline, Cecil, Dorchester, Queen Anne, Somerset, St. Mary’s, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester. Bourne's architectural papers related to Kent County, Maryland are located at the Historical Society of Kent County (the Nabb Center collection includes papers for all projects located outside of Kent County, Maryland).
Notable projects that Bourne worked on include Eyre Hall (Cheriton, Virginia), Cannon-Maston House (also known as Ickford) (Seaford, Delaware), Green Hill Church (Quantico, Maryland), Bolton (Quantico, Maryland), Double Mills (Easton, Maryland), Washington Hotel (Princess Anne, Maryland), Handsell (Vienna, Maryland), and many projects on the Upper Shore in Kent, Caroline, Cecil, and Queen Anne's Counties.
The collection is first arranged by state, followed by county, then alphabetically by individual project.
