The Worcester Environmental Trust (WET) records reflect a movement to preserve the ecology of the Delmarva Peninsula. Joseph and Ilia Fehrer spearheaded activism in Worcester County, Md. from 1972 until 2002, but were also instrumental in petitioning and lobbying for numerous environmental causes along the Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay. The Worcester Environmental Trust records range from 1959 to 2004, and contain executive, financial, and legal records that demonstrate this once effective environmental non-profit organization.
On October 11, 1973 the Worcester Environmental Trust (WET) was formed. The trust’s founders, Ilia Fehrer (March 24, 1927-July 17, 2007) and her husband, Joseph (October 25, 1916-September 9, 2005), were lower Eastern Shore environmentalists, who fought tirelessly to preserve the natural beauty of Worcester County’s Atlantic coastline. Ilia, as president, and Joseph, as treasurer and secretary, worked diligently to develop connections with important political figures and environmental organizations to lobby for the conservation of Delmarva’s nature preserves. They contacted to biologists, engineers, governors, mayors, congressmen, and President George W. Bush to support the establishment of firmer environmental regulations and laws. The size of the WET non-profit organization required an attorney’s assistance, and they hired K. King Burnett from the Webb, Burnett, and Simpson law firm. Under his direction, the Worcester Environment Trust became known as the Worcester Environmental Protection Fund Inc. This legal mandate protected the WET’s funds from the company assets if sued. The WET developed support and petitions against zoning in Ocean Pines and Ocean City at Lighthouse Sound and Captain’s Point Marina. They also were heavily involved with several organizations, such as, the Committee to Preserve Assateague, Worcester County Sanitation, and the Worcester County Planning Commission. The success of the Worcester Environmental Trust was directly tied to the years of tireless work by Ilia and Joseph Fehrer. After their deaths, the WET was reformatted and divided into several different departments within Worcester County. The environmental activism of Joseph and Ilia Fehrer through the Worcester Environmental Trust helped conserve the natural landscape of Worcester County and shaped judicial environmental regulations.
Three series of records contain the following documents on the The Administration series contains correspondence, accounting records, and executive documents regarding the Worcester Environmental Trust and the Worcester Environmental Protection Fund Inc. The Development and Preservation sections contain correspondence, newspapers clippings, articles, and judicial records that pertain to involvements of the Fehrers and the WET against development or a natural entity they strove to preserve on the Delmarva Peninsula.
The records have been arranged into three series: ADMINISTRATION, DEVELOPMENT, and PRESERVATION.
