The Joseph and Ilia Fehrer papers document the activities of the Fehrers and their environmentalism in Worcester County, Maryland. The Fehrers were instrumental in establishing The Nature Conservancy's Nassawango Preserve in 1973, as well as the Worcester Environmental Trust and Assateague Coastal Trust. The materials date from 1956-2020 with the bulk of the material dating between 1970 and 2000. Included are the TNC Nassawango Preserve internal files, which continued to be maintained by Joe Fehrer Jr. after Joseph Fehrer Sr.'s retirement.
Joseph (1916-2005) and Ilia Fehrer (1927-2007) were renowned environmentalists who were devoted to preserving the Chesapeake Bay and Delmarva. Joseph W. Fehrer Sr. was born in Baltimore in 1916 and attended the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and the Baltimore Business College. Ilia Fehrer was born Ilia J. Leonard in Washington on March 24, 1927. She graduated from Towson University in 1948 and began teaching in Baltimore. She and Joseph were married in 1948 and had 8 children, they moved to Snow Hill in 1967 when Joseph got a job with the National Park Service to become Land Acquisition Officer for the Assateague Island National Seashore. They began their activism in 1972 when plans were being made to develop the area along the Chincoteague Bay into “Harbour Town”, a 3,300-acre resort community. Their focus on the conservation of the Pocomoke River also led to the establishment of The Nature Conservancy's Nassawango Preserve, which Joe directed from the 1970s to the 1990s. The couple founded the Worcester Environmental Trust to battle this development and they were able to prevent the construction. In the 1980s The Fehrers spearheaded the effort to establish a water quality-monitoring program, prevented the damming of Nassawango Creek and convinced the Nature Conservancy to preserve the creek and upland forest that has grown to 10,000 acres and founded the Nassawango Creek Stewardship Committee. Ilia Fehrer was an active member of the Committee to Preserve Assateague, now known as the Assateague Coastal Trust and spoke before Congress to save the island. In the 1990s Ilia helped to establish the Maryland Coastal Bays Program.
The Joseph and Ilia Fehrer papers document environmentalism in Worcester County, Maryland through correspondence, reports, research files, photographs, field notes, and other documents created by the couple, as well as their son Joe Fehrer, Jr. and other employees at The Nature Conservancy. The materials date from 1956-2020 with the bulk of the material dating between 1970 and 2000.
The collection is arranged by the organization under which the Fehrer's were operating: The Nature Conservancy, Worcester Environmental Trust, Assateague Coastal Trust, and their personal work.
The files from The Nature Conservancy document the Nassawango Preserve in great detail, ranging from planning and reporting to scientific data and educational resources. These have been maintained in their original order (a file index for the original files is at the beginning of Box 1 and was organized from 1A to 27B) and subseries were created to group the categories. Documents within these individual folders are primarily arranged in reverse chronological order. The records include documents related to the management of the preserve, correspondence between offices, documents and maps related to land management (acquisitions and boundaries), work and special projects undertaken, education and outreach, publicity and photographs (and newspaper clippings), and miscellaneous files from The Nature Conservancy.
The work and documentation of the Worcester Environmental Trust and Assateague Coastal Trust in this collection were intertwined and is not as extensive as other series. The Worcester Environmental Trust records (2008.126) should be consulted.
The personal work of Joseph and Ilia Fehrer includes the couple's correspondence, awards, research, and photographs. This extensive series also includes papers from Joseph Fehrer's employment as the Land Acquisitions Officer at Assateague Island shortly after the National Park was established.
Books and maps that supported the Fehrers' work are also included in the collection.
