The collection contains plants, survey data, samples, reports, and correspondence regarding Ron Wilson and Frank Hirst, two self-taught botanists, and their work for The Nature Conservancy, a national preservationist organization, from 1978 to 2021. Also included is an extensive herbarium of native Delmarva plant species compiled by both Wilson and Hirst. The work in the collection covers botanizing throughout New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Ron Wilson, a learned botanist, was befriended by Frank Hirst who worked with Wilson at the Maryland/D.C. Nature Conservancy chapter. Hirst gained notoriety in the region for having discovered a rare type of Panicum (or Panic grass), which was later scientifically named Panicum Hirstii by the Philadelphia Botanical Club in dedication to Hirst and his brother Bob. Hirst was a New Jersey native who later moved to the Eastern Shore. His time in both regions allowed him to make many discoveries of native plants that aided in the Delaware National Heritage program and TNC’s preservation efforts. In 2009, Wilson also became popular for having discovered a rare type of orchid growing in a section of Nassawango Creek Preserve that was part of a project to reintroduce uncommon native plants. Wilson and Hirst worked together on many Nature Conservancy projects aimed towards acquiring and preserving land that contain endangered plant species. Frank Hirst passed away in 2009 at the age of 81. Ron Wilson also passed away at age 70 in early 2021.
The collection contains plants, survey data, samples, reports, and correspondence regarding Ron Wilson and Frank Hirst’s work for The Nature Conservancy from 1978 to 2021. The collection notes Ron Wilson's plant data and land surveys conducted for the Nature Conservancy and Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources. Wilson’s contract work for TNC includes monitoring and creating survey lists of the plants within the land easements the Conservancy was acquiring for preservation. Most contract reports are centered on the preservation efforts for Maryland’s Nassawango Creek. There are also documents and reports regarding TNC’s efforts to protect the Chesapeake Bay and its endangered areas. Frank Hirst’s files contain survey items, correspondence, reference materials, and scanned images of botanical journals. Most notes are from contract jobs done with Wilson, or independent trips to various Eastern Shore areas. Correspondence pertains to the discovery and monitoring of Panicum Hirstii (named after Hirst) and other rare plant species. Reference materials are books regarding the science of botany and the various plants found in North America, predominantly the East coast. Ron Wilson's field journals detailing TNC contract data and notes of various trips in and out of the country are also included in this collection. An herbarium of plants collected by Hirst and Wilson from 1990 to 2021 contains plant species from various parts of the Delmarva region, organized in alphabetical order. Multimedia contains CD-ROMs of TNC presentations, surveys, and geographical data, as well as a VHS tape of a trail dedication ceremony within Nassawango Creek Preserve. Educational materials and photographs from Wilson’s time as a teacher are also included.
The herbarium specimens comprise two distinct groups: the Ron Wilson collection and the Frank Hirst collection. The Wilson collection consists of dried and prepared plant specimens collected between 1992 and 2014 in the counties of Charles, Caroline, Garrett, Kent Wicomico and Dorchester counties in Maryland; in Preston, West Virginia; Virginia Beach, VA; in unspecified locations in New Jersey; and in Dixon county NC. Personnel who assisted in collecting the specimens as noted on the labels are: Bill McAvoy; Wes Knapp; Frank Hirst; E. Schuyler; Kari Metcalf; Jen Wilson; Dave Snyder and Keith Clancy. By far, the largest plant groups represented are Carex (sedges), Panicum (grasses) and Rhyncospora (beak-rush). As received the collection was arranged in alphabetical order by the species name. This order was preserved as the samples were processed and mounted. Two of Wilson wooden drying frames and their textile straps also came with the collection. 21 boxes including one oversize box.
The Frank Hirst collection consists of specimens collected between 1974 and 1995 in the counties of Dorchester, Worcester, Caroline, Talbot and Somerset Maryland; in Sussex and New Castle and Kent counties Delaware; in Dixie County FL and in North Hampton County VA. Accompanying the plant specimens is a three-ring binder that lists the plant samples, location collected, and details of the collection site. 3 boxes.
