The Worcester County Soil Conservation Services Collection primarily contains photographs, slides, and negatives depicting conservation activities in Worcester County, Maryland (as well as Somerset and Wicomico Counties) between the 1940s and 1990s. These photographs were taken by both the United States Department of Agriculture and the Maryland Department of Agriculture and nearly every image contains detailed descriptive information. Also included are tax ditch plans and specifications that date between 1934 and 1990 and educational resources (such as slide series and VHS tapes) that date between the 1980s and 1990s.
"On April 27, 1935 Congress passed Public Law 74-46, in which it recognized that "the wastage of soil and moisture resources on farm, grazing, and forest lands . . . is a menace to the national welfare" and established the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) as a permanent agency in the USDA. In 1994, SCS’s name was changed to the Natural Resources Conservation Service to better reflect the broadened scope of the agency’s concerns." (from US Department of Agriculture National Resource Conservation Services website https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/national/about/history/)
"[Soil Conservation] Districts are members of Maryland's Conservation Partnership, a coalition of federal, state and local agriculture agencies dedicated to protecting and conserving natural resources and promoting Maryland agriculture."
