Abstract

The Records of the Department of Early and Elementary Education document the creation and revision of the Education Department at Salisbury University from 1928-1985. The records include books and booklets on certificate requirements for teachers, handbooks for affective teaching methods, a register of attendance in public schools, memos, correspondence, and the education departments curriculum revision records.

Administrative History

Salisbury University was founded as Maryland State Normal School in 1925 as a teacher's college to help with the shortage of teachers in rural areas of the Eastern Shore. Maryland State Normal School, later Maryland State Teachers College, offered courses for training primary and secondary school teachers. As the school expanded and eventually became a public liberal arts college in 1963, renamed Salisbury State College, education transformed from the only subject taught to a department at the college.

The Early and Elementary Education Department is one of four departments in the Seidel School of Education. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in elementary education (grades 1-6) and early childhood education (Pre-K-grade 3), as well as a dual certification in elementary and early childhood education. Programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Scope and Content Note

The Records of the Department of Early and Elementary Education documents changes in the department from 1928 to 1985. Included in the collection are the general education requirements that were necessary to graduate with an early education major, curriculum records, handbooks, memos, correspondence, and notes of the Salisbury Education Department N.A.S.D.T.E.C Report.
