Abstract

The Charles Robert Virgil Hall collection documents various Eastern Shore families and their activities from 1789-1987, with the bulk of the records dating from 1885-1920. Eastern Shore communities are documented via land records, fraternal organizations, church materials including programs and the Journal of the Diocese of Easton, printed advertisements, family histories, and photographic prints.

Biographical History

Charles Robert Virgil Hall, better known as Rob Hall is the past President of the Lower Delmarva Genealogical Society, an active volunteer of the Snow Hill Public Library and a collector of Delmarva history. Mr. Hall has given many of his personal acquisitions to the Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture; he lives in Snow Hill, Maryland.

Scope and Content Note

Series I: Church Records, 1847-1987, document varying Eastern Shore religious affiliations and their activities including regional meetings and individual church services.

Series II: Fraternal Organization Records, 1927-1949, document the bylaws and membership application process of the Knights of Pythias, and other fraternal organizations from Crisfield, Maryland.

Series III: Legal Records, 1789-1961, document a series of land transactions across the Eastern Shore including Riverton, Sussex County, Del., Somerset County, Md., and as far north as Philadelphia, Pa. Additional legal records include marriage certificates, bond administrations, and correspondence to Governor J. Millard Tawes. 

Series IV: Family Histories, 1761-1986, individually document the genealogies of select local Eastern Shore families.

Series V: Printed Materials, 1920-1976, include advertisements and programs from Eastern Shore businesses and local organization activities.  

Series VI: Visual Materials, 1880-1972, materials include photographic portraits and streetscapes of people and locations throughout the Eastern Shore primarily documenting Pocomoke City, Salisbury, and Crisfield, Maryland. A scrapbook documents the activities in Hallwood, Virginia in the 1950s; significant national events are also noted.

Arrangement Statement

The Charles Robert Virgil Hall collection has been arranged into six series, CHURCH RECORDS, FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION RECORDS, LEGAL RECORDS, FAMILY HISTORIES, PRINTED MATERIALS, and VISUAL MATERIALS. The materials within each of the series have been arranged chronologically.

Folders are listed by their location in each box; any given subject may be dispersed throughout the entirety of the collection.
