Abstract

The Luis Alaniz collection consists of the personal scrapbooks, diaries, photographs, and military memorabilia of World War Two veteran Luis Alaniz. Born October 28, 1922 in Dallas, Texas, Alaniz enlisted in the United States Army on September 10, 1940. He was initially a Medical Technician, promoted to Private on May 25, 1941 and later Corporal on July 16, 1942, but was later a technician in the 755th Railway Shop Battalion. Alaniz was sent to Europe (France and Belgium) on December 5, 1943 and returned on October 5, 1945. He later worked for the New Mexico National Guard, United States Air Force in Sandia Base, and was part of the International Chemical Workers Union in Los Angeles, California.

Scope and Content Note

The Luis Alaniz collection consists of the personal scrapbooks, diaries, photographs, and military memorabilia of World War Two veteran Luis Alaniz. Born October 28, 1922 in Dallas, Texas, Alaniz enlisted in the United States Army on September 10, 1940. He was initially a Medical Technician, promoted to Private on May 25, 1941 and later Corporal on July 16, 1942, but was later a technician in the 755th Railway Shop Battalion. Alaniz was sent to Europe (France and Belgium) on December 5, 1943 and returned on October 5, 1945. He later worked for the New Mexico National Guard, United States Air Force in Sandia Base, and was part of the International Chemical Workers Union in Los Angeles, California. Items in the collection include his personal bible, diary with many photographs and autographs, an issue of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin from December 7, 1941, photographs and negatives of family and Luis himself, two scrapbooks (Boxes 43B and C) containing many photographs and souvenirs from the United States, France, and Belgium, military caps (Box 43E), pins (Box 43F), and flags (Box 43D, as well as Box 43C scrapbook), identification cards (including a Mexican immigration record from 1943), and memorabilia related to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.). The materials date primarily from Alaniz's active service during the war between 1940 and 1945. Alaniz died on November 17, 2009 at the age of 87 and is buried at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
