Abstract

The papers of Vernon R. Whitely document his life experiences including his trip to the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, time spent in the Civilian Conservation Corps and as a member of the United States Army Signal Service during World War II. Documenting materials include a bound publication from the CCC, photographs and service records from his military service as well as post-war ephemera as a veteran. Materials date from 1933-2006 with the bulk of the material dating from his World War II service, 1944-1945.

Biographical History

Vernon R. Whitely was born on October 9, 1910, and was part of the Civil Conservation Corps initiative in 1933, where he worked on construction sites and radio factories. He attended the 1939 World’s Fair held in Flushing Meadows, New York. He served in the United States Army during World War II, enlisting in February 1941. Vernon would become an intercept operator, Private Third Class. He was part of the effort to capture Normandy and to retake Paris from the Nazis. While overseas, he traveled to England, France, Germany, and Luxembourg before returning to Easton, Maryland. He married Oleada Gernert on April 25, 1942.  Vernon and Oleada had three girls; Dorothy, Nancy, and Oleada. He died on April 1, 2007, in Easton, Maryland
