Abstract

The US 50/Route 301 Property Dispute records documents the process Margaret Whittle went through to sell, her mother, Jeannette Nash’s estate and property on Kent Narrows in Kent Island. The records details correspondence with Margaret and the Maryland Department of Transportation regarding the trunk line and Bay Bridge expansion from 1951-1999, with the bulk of the material dating from 1976-1999 wherein Margaret was left with little ability to sell the estate.

Biographical History

The expansion of US 50/Route 301 hampered the sale of Jeannette Nash’s (1879-1976) estate and property by her daughter, Margaret Whittle. Jeannette left her family with an estate on Kent Narrows in Kent Island and Medicaid bills. In the late 1970s, the Maryland Department of Transportation began planning an expansion to the Bay Bridge over Kent Narrows (US 50/Route 301). The expansion would go through many phases, until 1986 when a comprehensive plan was designed for US 50/Route 301. Construction began in the early 1990s, and it was not until after it had finished that Margaret was able to sell the sell the property and settle her mother’s estate.
