Dr. Alfred K. Talbot was born in New York City on September 1, 1916. He attended the Hampton Institute and later the college of William and Mary. Prior to his tenure at Salisbury University, Talbot taught as a teacher, was named Principal of Carver Elementary School, and became the Assistant Principal of Burton Heights School. From 1962 to 1964 he served as the President of the Virginia Federation of Parents and Teachers and the Virginia Teachers Association. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Teachers Association and in 1968 became Supervisor of Elementary Schools of Williamsburg Public Schools. In 1970, he joined the Education and Sociology departments at Salisbury University and was the University's first full time African American professor. Talbot died on July 20, 2004 after 30 years of service to the university. Throughout his life, Talbot was involved with the Civil Rights Movement, the NAACP, and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Talbot's collection include correspondence, reports, and other printed material from his tenure at Salisbury University, his involvement with the Civil Rights Movement, and his activities within Virginia's education system.
Dr. Alfred K. Talbot was born in New York City, September 1, 1916. Talbot was educated in New York City and later Toronto, Canada. He obtained a BS in Education in 1940 and a MA in Educational Administration in 1949 from Hampton Institute. In 1981 he earned an Ed.D in Sociology and Higher Education from the College of William and Mary. After teaching for several years, Talbot was named Principal of Carver Elementary School in Loudon County, VA in 1947. He later became Assistant Principal of Burton Heights School in Williamsburg, VA in 1955. In 1962 the Virginia Federation of Parents and Teachers and the Virginia Teachers Association tapped him to become President where he served until 1964. Later that same year, he moved on to the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Teachers Association. He stayed with the organization until 1966 and then returned to role of Principal with the Burton Heights Elementary School in Williamsburg, Virginia. Two years later in 1968, he became Supervisor of Elementary Schools of Williamsburg Public Schools. He served in that capacity for one year and went on to become Director of Federal and Special Curriculum for local public schools in Williamsburg, VA in 1970.In 1970 he was recruited by Dr. Norman Crawford, President of Salisbury University, to become Salisbury University’s first full time African American professor. He was assigned jointly to the departments of Education and Sociology. Active in the field of education, the Civil Rights Movement, the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History, the NAACP and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Talbot was also listed in Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in Black America. In 2001, Salisbury University appointed him Professor Emeritus. After 30 years of service to Salisbury University and the campus community, Dr. Talbot died July 20, 2004 at the age of 87.
This collection of correspondence, reports, manuscripts and printed material provides a glimpse into the professional activities of A. K. Talbot, Salisbury University’s first African American full time faculty member. It highlights his personal and professional achievements, his relationships within the community, and his interests in social issues, such as the Fair Housing Survey of Wicomico and Somerset Counties undertaken in 1984. It also documents his interest in civil rights through his activities with the Virginia Teachers Association and the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. The collection also offers insight into his academic perspective as seen in his many lecture notes.

- This series contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, printed matter, handwritten notes and manuscripts highlighting some of A.K. Talbots’s professional highlights and education.
Series II. Professional Interests, 1962 – 1995
- This series contains a variety of material grouped by subject with much of the material focusing on black political and social issues. The subseries reflect Talbot’s professional interests over the course of his career before and at Salisbury University. Material on the subject was both written by and collected by Talbot.
