The material contained in Series I and II was used during the 2005 Teach American History Summer Institute, a joint venture between the Wicomico County Board of Education Department of Social Studies and the Salisbury University History Department.  Dean Kotlowski, a History Professor, was a presenter. Items were used during his lecture on Civil Rights.

Abstract

This collection contains newspaper clippings, transcripts, correspondence and audio tape cassettes. The material in the collection tells the story of Aloysius Sheppard an 18 year Black American accused and convicted of rape who was subsequently lynched in 1915 in Caroline County, Maryland. The collection also covers the political climate regarding the subject of Civil Rights in 1963 through presidential recordings and partial transcripts obtained from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. Additional materials include documents on the Nanticoke Native Americans and Assateague Island National Seashore.

Biographical History

Dean J. Kotlowski, Ph.D., is a Professor of History at Salisbury University. He earned his doctorate at Indiana University, 1998; he has widely published on mid-20th-century people including Richard Nixon, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Paul McNutt. 

Scope and Content Note

Series I.  Alwishe “’ Wish” Sheppard, 1915 – 2005, This series contains a copy of his death certificate, news clippings, oral history transcripts and correspondence detailing the arrest, convicting and lynching of Alwishe Sheppard and his haunting of the Caroline County jail.   

Series II.  John F. Kennedy, 1963, This series contains partial transcripts and presidential recordings on nine audio cassette tapes. 

Series III.  Nanticoke Native Americans, 1984 - 2005, This series contains an oral history interview conducted with Chief Tee Norwood of the Nanticoke Native American tribe along with Powwow programs and an oversized poster**.
