The Serrell Family Collection documents the personal and family history of Andrew Serrell (1923-2018) including the Serrell family, Demetre family, Odier family, and other ancestors. Personal items relating to Andrew Serrell's career in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1974 include pilot logs, photographs, naval orders, and other service-related documents. Serrell's paternal family, including the puppeteer Edith Serrell, lived primarily in Dobbs Ferry, New York and are documented through photographs, correspondence, and other documents. Serrell's maternal family--the Demetre and Odier families--frequently went back and forth between France, New Orleans, and New York City. This branch of the family is heavily documented through family histories, correspondence, photographs, drawings, and business papers. There are also three framed portrait paintings and several artifacts.
Andrew “Andy” Serrell was born in 1923 in Dobbs Ferry, New York and knew at a young age that he wanted to be a pilot; he began taking flying lessons in 1939. In 1941, he earned his student pilot’s certificate, graduated from high school and joined the Navy. He received the most advanced flight instruction found anywhere in the world, including academics and ground school at St. Lawrence University and Wesleyan University, from there he shipped out to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for physical training. After further flight training, in 1944, he accepted the position as a patrol bomber pilot and he was dispatched to the Pacific to fight the Japanese. Immediately following the war, Serrell continued his education at the University of Maryland and George Washington University; he also studied a new approach to aerial photography and in 1959 he became an air-intelligence officer in the Sixth Fleet under Admiral George Anderson. By 1963, he was selected to go to the Pentagon as a chief briefing officer to the Chief of Naval Operations, ultimately retiring in 1974.Prior to his retirement in 1972; he established his own flight school, Ocean City Aircraft to continue his life-long passion for flying. He married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Francis (1924-2015) in 1944, they had four children. Andrew Serrell died in January 2018.
Serrell's parents were Jeanne M. (Demetre) (1892-1962), an artist, and Harrison Serrell (1885-1938), a Wall Street banker, who lived in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Jeanne M. Demetre was the daughter of Jeanne M (Odier) (1864-1956) and Andre Demetre (1862-?). While the Odier and Demetre families lived primarily in Nice and Paris, France, Jeanne M. Odier's father, Adolphe, immigrated to New Orleans in 1846. The family owned the Live Oak Planation there until the first half of the 20th century. Adolphe's father, Jacques Antoine "James," and grandfather, Antoine, were influental bankers in Paris. The Serrell Family Collection documents the personal and family history of Andrew Serrell (1923-2018) including the Serrell family, Demetre family, Odier family, and other ancestors.
Items relating to the Serrell family (Series 1), in general, include a family tree and written history, correspondence of Charles, Emma, and Jeanne Serrell, Laura (Newton) Serrell’s cash and notebooks, and many photographs of individuals, couples, and groups. Many items also relate to the Newton family. Both the Serrells and Newtons primarily resided in upstate New York, especially Dobbs Ferry.
Personal items from Andrew Serrell (Subseries 1.1) relate to his career in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1974, including 12 pilot log books dating from 1940 to 2002, naval orders from 1942 to 1974, items from Patrol Squadron 44 when he was Commander, many photographs, newspapers and clippings, and two scrapbooks.
Personal items from Edith Serrell (Subseries 1.2) include a manuscript about a family factory entitled “Thread of Silk,” sketches and paintings, newspaper clippings, photographs and slides, and two film reels.
Items relating to General Jonathan M. Wainwright (Subseries 1.3), a cousin of Andrew Serrell, include a program for “Wainwright Day” in 1943, newspaper articles, a 1946 book about Wainwright, and photographs.
Items relating to Arthur Jacobs (Subseries 1.4), husband of Marguerite Serrell, include a catalog for his “Jacobs Improved Drill Chuck,” the couple’s wedding book, a memorial scrapbook for Arthur, and Marguerite’s obituary.
Items relating to the Demetre and Odier families (Series 2) are extensive and include both French and English documents. The Odier family lived primarily in France, but also lived and owned in New Orleans, Louisiana beginning with Adolphe Odier. The Demetre family also primarily lived in France, but also lived in New York City beginning with Andre Demetre. These families are documented in detail through written histories and family charts, correspondence, and many photograph albums and scrapbooks. Also included are Antoine Odier’s financier documents, documents related to Carlo Marochetti and the Saint Denis Chapel, Live Oak Plantation management materials, a bill of sale for a slave in 1861, Demetre Corporation and other business papers, property management papers, wills, Russian bonds from 1912, military records, and several awards and certificates, among many other items. Finally, there are many illustrations and paintings, including some depicting Ceylon and the Live Oak Plantation, from Jeanne M. (Demetre) Serrell, Adolphe Odier, (likely) Andre Demetre, and others. Five volumes (in ten parts) of Le moyen age et la renaissance, 1848-1851, owned and used for artwork by Jeanne M. (Demetre) Serrell, are also included (but separated).
