Abstract

This is a collection of maps, postcards, flyers, catalogs and other local ephemera accumulated by Florence Elizabeth Pruitt (Allen) over the course of her life. The date range of the materials runs from 1904 to 1995.

Biographical History

Florence Elizabeth Pruitt (Allen) was born in Somerset County in 1918, and graduated from Wicomico High School in 1935. She worked at the Fruitland Post Office until 1980, and was the first woman elected to the town council in 1968. She married Otis S. Pruitt and remained with him until his death. She then married her second husband, Larry Allen in 2001. She died in 2010. 

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains minutes and other documents from the Red Star Lines company. There are several maps of Salisbury and the surrounding areas as well as calendars from various local businesses. There are various programs from local events such as commencements and plays, and also catalogs for local businesses like W.F. Allen and E.S. Adkins and Co. There are postcards depicting local scenes such as the city park and the Arthur W. Perdue stadium. There are some miscellaneous items such as account books, a composition book and a Maryland public school register for Somerset County. One of the ledgers contains the farm records of George S. Mills, which includes a recipe for the feed he created for his laying hens circa 1914-1917. It also has accounts of supplies he purchased and payments he made to employees.
