The Vinson and Buck collection is made up of the personal papers and artifacts of the Buck family. The collection contains personal documents dating back to 1838 and includes the records and belongings of several families related to the Bucks, including: the Allens, the Gorrells, the Raudenbushes, the Klines, the Jennings and the Phillips. The bulk of the collection is made up of photographs that document Leonard Buck’s time in the military, the travels and home life of the Buck family, and local history. Other items include religious papers, personal and business correspondence, and family mementos.
Leonard Raymond Buck was the eldest child of William John Buck (1898 – 1956) and Mabel Kate Raudenbush Buck (1896 -1961). Born in 1920, Leonard was originally from Pennsburg, Pennsylvania and joined the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1940. In 1941, Leonard joined the United States Army where he served until the end of the World War 2 as a member of the 111th Combat Team attached to the 7th Army. For his service, Leonard received several honors: the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and two Bronze Stars. After the war, Leonard met Ruth Valesca Allen. The two married in 1946 and had one child together, their daughter Marlene, in 1948. Mr. Buck owned and operated the Buster Brown Shoe Store in the Salisbury Mall from 1969 until 1984. For more than 30 years, Leonard worked as a minister at the Wicomico Nursing Home. He passed away on January 3, 2012.
Ruth Valesca Allen Buck was born in Salisbury, Maryland in 1924. She was the eldest child of Fulton White Allen (1892 – 1962) and Lois Valesca Jennings (1893 – 1974). Ruth was the granddaughter of William Francis Allen, who owned and operated the W.F. Allen Company in Salisbury. Ruth graduated from Wicomico High School in 1940. She attended the University of Rochester where she studied English, graduating in 1944. While in University, Ruth was a member of the Sigma Kappa Upsilon sorority as well as social and educational groups like y-1,2,3 and the Outing and Kaleidoscope clubs. After graduation, Ruth returned to Maryland where she met and married Leonard Buck in 1946. The two had one daughter, Marlene, in 1948. Ruth worked with Dorchester County Social Services until she retired in 1985. Ruth was an active member of her community, assisting her husband in ministering at the Wicomico Nursing Home. Ruth passed away on December 15th, 2000.
