Brittingham Plant Farms records document the development of and retail practices of the wholesale plant company in Salisbury, Maryland. Company practices are documented with plant catalogs, advertisements, photographs and printed ephemera. The materials date from 1897-2014 with the bulk of the material dating from the company founding in 1945 through its demise in 1999. Also included are family and company histories written by Sylvia Brittingham Robertson.

Brittingham Plant Farms became one of the largest strawberry plant producers in the country known for their virus-free varieties. After successfully selling holly wreaths and operated a produce re-sale business, James W. Brittingham (1903-1994) purchased five acres of farmland and began strawberry plant operations with his wife, Hazel. In their first year of business, Brittingham Plant Farms offered one type of strawberry plant from an acreage that yielded over 500,000 plants. Demand for the plants allowed the farm to expand to 135 acres of land and 29 different types of strawberry plants. The Brittingham name became nationally recognized; plants were shipped across the United States. Due to volatile weather patterns and the increased popularity of u-pick farms, Brittingham Plant Farms closed their doors in 1999. The customer mailing list was sold to Nourse Farms in Massachusetts and the Indiana Berry and Plant Company.
