Abstract

The George J. Weide Jr. Collection contains material from 1855 to 2020 and documents Weide’s life and the lives of his relatives in the Weide, Huneke, and Law families. There are several photo albums of family documents, a high school yearbook, a yearbook of the “Brigade’s Best” in Shihung, Korea from 1972 , as well as birth certificates, baptism records, NASA newspapers, certificates, and a diploma.

Biographical History

George J. Weide Jr. was born on October 29, 1948, in Washington D.C. His parents were George J. Weide Sr. and Elise Irene Weide. As a child, he attended the Archdiocese Catholic School of Washington. He participated in an NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program in 1963 where he received the highest rating of Distinguished Expert. While attending the University of Scranton in 1969, he started Officer's Training for the Army Reserves and graduated in 1970. During his time with the Army, Weide received the titles of Second Lieutenant in 1970 and then of Captain in 1978. He worked with NASA and received several awards and certificates for his work. Weide passed away on September 12, 2017.

Scope and Content Note

This collection is divided into four series and ranges from 1855 to 2020: Series 1: Family Records, Series 2: Photo Albums and Yearbooks, Series 3: NASA Memorabilia, and Series 4: Certificates and Plaques.

The first series, Family Records, contains birth certificates, prayer cards, baptism records, medical examiner records, and various school records for the  Weide, Huneke, and Law Families.

The second series, Photo Albums and Yearbooks, contains a 1929 high school yearbook and a 1972 army yearbook from Shihung, Korea. There are also two Weide Family photo albums and a collection of photographs from the Cuban Refugee Crisis. This series also contains two copies of photographs of George Weide with FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover from 1963.

The third series, NASA Memorabilia,  contains newspapers from when the Challenger crashed in 1988 as well as NASA pamphlets and flags that were used to mark where debris from the shuttle Columbia broke up over Texas in 2003.

The final series, Certificates and Plaques, contains various plaques, certificates, and awards George Weide received. There is a plaque from the National Security Systems from 2009, an N.S.S.S.T. Group Achievement Award from 2006, and a NASA Certificate of Appreciation from 2010. There are also two army title promotion awards from 1970 and 1978 for George Weide.
