Also within the collection is a photograph of "Miss Sallie Coulbourne," an Oakland Teacher in 1918, who would have been a nurse involved in the 1933 flood.

25th Anniversary Scrapbook

The Maryland State Normal School at Salisbury opened in September 1925 as a two-year college to train elementary teachers on the state’s Eastern Shore. In 1950, the school celebrated its 25th (silver) anniversary and dedicated its first new building (the men’s dormitory, now Wicomico Hall) since the construction of the administrative building (now Holloway Hall). This loose scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photographs by Donald Turner, and programs related to the events surrounding the 25th anniversary of State Teachers College at Salisbury (now Salisbury University). Oversize newspaper issues and clippings remain folded.

Albert and Bettie Morris papers

The Albert and Bettie Morris papers document their lives as long-time residents of Salisbury, Maryland, and include early family records of Rosa Lee Tilghman Morris as well as correspondence, biographical information, printed materials, newspapers and artifacts. The materials date from 1895-2008 with the bulk of the material dating from 1941-1979. Dr. Morris’ extensive World War II service record is documented and includes correspondence, service papers and photographic documentation of his encounter with General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Also included are the records of the Eastern Shore Opera and Symphony Societies as well as ephemera from many other local historic and symphonic organizations.

Allen and Brittingham Family photographs

The Allen and Brittingham Family photographs documents the lives of the Brittingham family, mainly that of Gordon Brittingham, and Fulton Allen’s children in Salisbury, Maryland from 1880-1991 with the bulk of the material dating from 1942-1960. The Brittingham family photographs encompass Gordon Brittingham’s service during World War II in the European theatre as well as his life in Salisbury, Maryland after the war with his wife, Dorothy Allen through the 1960s. The photographs also document Gordy Brittingham, Gordon’s father’s barbershop at the Mayflower Hotel in Salisbury during the 1930s.  The Allen family photographs document their children: Julia, Ruth, and Walter’s lives through a series of portraits, some containing photos from their home, Holly Hill located in Salisbury, Maryland. In addition to the volume of photographs, other documenting information correspondence, newspaper clippings, and family histories.

The Salisbury University Alumni Association was founded to “develop and foster an abiding loyalty to Salisbury University; promote a professional and ethical spirit; encourage active participation in all activities that pertain to the betterment and growth of the University; unite graduates and undergraduates in Salisbury University; and take such other actions as may be deemed appropriate to promote the interests and welfare of Salisbury University.” (From the Salisbury University Alumni Association website.) The association achieves their mission by hosting events throughout the country to unite alumni, hosting reunions, and distributing newsletters. The association encourages its members to send notices of nuptials, births, and other lifetime achievements for publishing in the association’s newsletter. The Alumni Collection contains proposed constitutions, Alumni Association history, membership and reunion directories, invitations to reunions and other alumni events, wedding and birth announcements, postcards, ephemera, newspaper clippings, newsletters from 1950 to 2005, and a medal commemorating the completion of the Alumni House in 1996. Documents surrounding the Alumni Association’s induction ceremonies from 1931 to 1951 are present.

Baglean and Carnean Societies collection

The Baglean Literary Society was founded in September, 1925 and was named in honor of Dr. William C. Bagley. The Carnean Literary Society was named in honor of local educator, Miss Mabel Carney. The Baglean and Carnean Societies competed with each other yearly in athletics and theatrical productions. The Baglean and Carnean Society collection includes two notebooks containing the minutes and finances of the Baglean Society from 1926 to 1929. Loose papers included in the collection contain minutes for the Carnean Society from 1931 to 1932, rosters of Carnean Society members, correspondence of the Carnean Society, programs for competitions between the two societies, and the societies’ songs.

The Benjamin Franklin Kennerly papers document the extensive business background of one of Salisbury, Maryland’s mayors. Correspondences and receipts, as well as ledgers and checkbooks, record the personal and business interactions of a small-town businessman at the beginning of the twentieth century. Correspondence and receipts dated after his death, created by his family members and business partners, provide insight into the elongated process of receiving life insurance and selling off businesses. The papers also include family photographs, advertisements, and other business notes and materials. The papers date from 1868-1982 and include modern publications referencing B. F. Kennerly and subjects he found interesting.

Benn Maggs Photographs

Campbell's Soup Company (Salisbury, Md.) booklet

Campbell's Soup Company opened a manufacturing plant in Salisbury, Maryland in 1946, after the company purchased the Phillips Brothers Canning Plant. Here, Campbell's canned Tomato Juice and Tomato Soup, also packed brined diced peppers and celery. The Campbell's Salisbury Plant Memories was produced at the end of the company's production to commemorate the 47 years of production on the Eastern Shore. The booklet features a brief history of the Campbell's Soup Company's production history in Salisbury and Pocomoke. Furthermore, the booklet features long-standing employees who dedicated their life to Campbell's.

Class of 1930 Scrapbook

The Maryland State Normal School at Salisbury opened in September 1925 as a two-year college to train elementary teachers on the state’s Eastern Shore. The fifth class to graduate was in 1930. This loose scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera related to the State Normal School (now Salisbury University) graduating class of 1930. The scrapbook was collected by Virginia Dryden and presented to the school in 1980 as a celebration of the class’ 50th anniversary. There are approximately 30 photographs of students and faculty going about their daily activities, programs and tickets for various social events, newspaper clippings and Holly Leaf issues, theatre playbills, and materials from the 50th anniversary of the 1930 graduating class.

Clyde Gilbert Truitt collection

Folklife Collection - The Folklore of Young Gay Men in Salisbury

In 1995, former Salisbury University student Stephanie Wallace collected folk material. Her collection explores the folklore of the gay subculture from an emic-etic standpoint. The student interviewed two of her friends for the purpose of this paper. They discussed about gay rights marches, the reason behind their identity symbols (rainbow flag, pink triangles) and the subgroups' dressing styles (drag queens dress like women, butch wear cop uniforms, voguers wear women's clothes but dress like men, etc.). Other aspects such as music, folk speech, and more are also included. This package contains an audiotape, various xeroxed ads and pictures, a handwritten slang glossary, and a magazine featuring articles about gay rights, events and identity symbols.

Henrietta Byrd papers

The Henrietta Byrd papers are deeds, wills, lease, transactions, and correspondence of a 19th Century businesswomen in Salisbury, Maryland, 1842-1891. Following the death of her husband, Henrietta sought legal counsel from Congressmen and Attorney, John Rankin Franklin, to understand her rights as a widowed entrepreneur in the Antebellum Era. She later owned at least two properties, including the “Wicomico House,” which was four-story restaurant and hotel on Main Street, Salisbury.

Holloway Photograph Collection

Dr. William James Holloway was born in Salisbury on January 29, 1873. The Holloway Photograph Collection depicts the formative years of the Maryland State Normal School from 1925-1928, Holloway’s family life and activities in the 1920s, and Wicomico County Public Schools in the 1910s. In 1908, Holloway became the Wicomico County Superintendent of Schools, during which he also earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University. By 1917, he was named the State Supervisor of Rural Schools and then the Assistant State Superintendent of Schools in 1922. Holloway’s proposal for a normal school in Salisbury came to fruition in September 1925; he was named superintendent and principal of the school. Holloway resigned on October 5, 1934 and passed away on Saturday March 14, 1936.

K. King Burnett papers

The K. King Burnett papers encompass the executive activities and operations of numerous environmental organizations. These documents reflect the impact that preservation regulations had on the Delmarva Peninsula specifically, Wicomico and Worcester counties as it evolved from 1960 - 2014, and the entirety of the papers span from as early as 1894 - 2014. Burnett served as a legal advisor for these organizations. His papers contain numerous board of director reports which reflect by-law drafts and final copies, logistics proceedings regarding agency consolidation, and documents entailing litigation representation including the enforcement of environmental regulations. Organizations of note include Committee to Preserve Assateague Island, Wicomico Planning, Zoning, and Development Committee, and Greater Salisbury Committee.

The L.W. Gunby papers consist of the personal papers of L.W. Gunby and of his family and of the records of his businesses on the Delmarva Peninsula from 1845 to 1991. The collection contains financial ledgers and hundreds of letters, deeds, mortgages, stock certificates and tax returns, offering insight into a century of economic life on the Delmarva Peninsula. It includes the testimonial of Rev. George Handy Wailes on the occasion of Gunby’s selection as Salisbury’s Man of the Year in 1936. Wailes, the Visiting Professor of Hebrew at Princeton Theological Seminary, honors Gunby’s business and civic contributions to the city of Salisbury. The collection also includes a scrapbook commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Gunby’s Hardware in 1972.

Laurel-Thomas Young Collection

The Laurel-Thomas Young Collection mostly documents the life of "Tommy" Young from 1937 to 1948 while he was a teenager and student at State Teachers College in Salisbury. The collection includes a photograph of the 1937 Salisbury Indians, Eastern Shore League baseball team, a scrapbook of S.T.C. baseball clippings and dance cards, and two issues of The Holly Leaf. Also included is a postcard from Salisbury State University and a metal button which reads "Salisbury State Go Gulls."

Lester Fooks Collection

The Lester Fooks Collection was compiled by the Private from Salisbury, Maryland primarily between 1941 and 1945, although some of the material dates after this period to 1986 and even more dates before to 1874. The collection documents Fooks' service in Europe during the Second World War. The collection consists of photographs of American troops during the construction of a bridge, photographs of Adolf Hitler and German troops, French postcards, Reichsbank notes ranging from 1 to 100,000 that date between 1908 and 1923, Dutch athletic awards from the 1930s, German cigarettes with Nazi stamps, a Nazi pin and uniform cutting, an American stamp, and coins from Germany, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Great Britain, Canada, and the United States that date between 1874 and 1986. The collection also includes a German ammunitions box with Fooks' addresses written on top.

Lester Laws papers

The Lester Laws papers consist of the records of Laws Construction Company and of the personal papers of Lester Laws and of his family from 1816 to 1994. The collection contains advertising, photographs, financial ledgers, correspondence, receipts and blueprints offering insight into the development of the infrastructure of the Delmarva Peninsula between 1920 and 1959. The company records include dozens of advertisements for construction equipment, tools and building materials and photographs of construction projects in progress. The collection also includes Lester Laws’ genealogy notes, and the personal papers of his daughter, Helen Laws Pomar. Pomar attended Salisbury State Teachers College, now Salisbury University, and served in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. Her college score reports, military manuals, and copies of a post-newspaper from Camp White, Oregon, provide a glimpse into the educational and military experience of women in the 1930s and 1940s.

Hankins later became the president of the Alumni Association and moved to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. She passed away in 2006.

Minutes of the Faculty

In the early years of the Maryland State Normal School, the faculty assumed many of the administrative responsibilities. Besides determining curriculum, the members of the faculty—among other things— formed committees, planned expenditures, planned school trips and social events, managed the extracurricular activities of the students, and coordinated with the other state teachers colleges. The minutes of the faculty document the weekly and bi-weekly meetings of the school’s faculty members from 1925 to 1952. These loose minutes also included associated documents like reports, notes, correspondence, and other ephemera. These meetings demonstrate the broad roles the faculty at the school assumed in addition to their instruction. There is a gap in the records between 1926 and 1931.

Morris Family papers

The Morris Family papers document the Salisbury, Maryland residents who lived at 533 South Division Street and owned and operated the Morris Millwork Company. Photographic prints and funeral ephemera document the relationships of Levin Merrill Morris, his wife, S. Martha and their daughter, Dorothy Catherine, 1890-1955. Additionally, handwritten notes on family birth, marriage and death records have been maintained, this includes an 1864 Evidence of Title for Richard Morris of the US Colored Troop. Dorothy’s friendships with her college classmates are documented in a scrapbook she compiled while at Temple University as well as in The Tatler, the yearbook of Wicomico High School.

Myers and Doris Calcott Letters

These letters were written between 1917 and 1951 by Myers "Jack" Calcott and Doris Gay and chronicle their relationship as it progressed from friends to spouses. Myers and Doris, who were married on June 18, 1929, began writing each other in 1927 and sent many several page letters until Myers' death on July 10, 1951; letters prior to 1927 are primarily from Myers' mother while he was attending the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as some of Doris' personal letters and school certificates when she lived in Charles Town, West Virginia. Myers' worked for the Merchants and Miners Transportation Corporation after graduating, which meant he moved frequently and was often at sea while Doris and their three daughters remained in Charlottesville, Norfolk, and Newport Beach. Myers served on the USS Kitty Hawk and USS Magoffin as a naval reservist. In 1946 they moved into their first permanent home in Salisbury, Maryland but Myers, who had struggled with drinking problems, became a patient at Perry Point Veterans Hospital.

Paul Butler collection consists of photocopies of historical documents from Wicomico and Worcester Counties, Maryland, accumulated by Paul Butler. It contains land deeds and manumission deeds documenting African American history from 1803-1928. It includes a copy of the book, Commanders of the Dining Room, with a biographical sketch of L.D. Houston, a native of Salisbury, Maryland, and the headwaiter of the Peninsula Hotel in Seabright, New Jersey, in 1905. The collection also contains court dockets, voting records and ledgers documenting legal and economic history from 1694-1910. It includes a ledger from a school in Lindseyville (Klej Grange) Maryland from 1850-1852, and a ledger from a store in Tyaskin, Maryland from 1898-1901.

Peter Shockley Collection

The Peter Shockley Collection contains deed transfers, plats, survey information, and transit books involving the work of civil engineer Peter Shockley during the early 20th century. Shockley oversaw transfers of land and often surveyed the land being transferred and drew plats for the land. Throughout his career surveying the Delmarva area, he used over 100 transit books containing information from deed transfers, election districts, and general land surveys of people, places, and businesses. Some of the land histories involved in deed transfers go back to the 17th century.

The Records of the German Club and German Study Abroad Programs collection documents the history of the German Club at Salisbury University and two study abroad programs offered by the Modern Languages Department between 1980 and 2015. Included in the collection are flyers, photographs, scrapbooks, video recordings, press releases, administrative forms, notes and correspondence among other materials created by Salisbury University (previously Salisbury State College and Salisbury State University) students and the advisor of German Club, Klaudia Thompson. Two events, Oktoberfest and Immersion Weekend, are the main focus of the German Club records. Changes mentioned include the building and dedication of Blackwell as well as the Guerrieri Academic Commons. Ledgers and journals in the collection detail incoming books, fines, and lost books. The collection is mainly centered around the various design and construction blueprints, but also includes design catalogs, emails discussing safety measures for the building, and price bids.

Richard Hoffman Collection

The Richard Hoffman Collection contains documents that reflect the time Dr. Richard Hoffman spent at Salisbury University from 1993 to 2019. He was professor of management for over 25 years and interim dean of Perdue School of Business for three years. During his time as interim dean, he oversaw the addition of a museum to the Perdue School. He gathered a small library of scholarly journals on business, management, and marketing. He also led a winter study abroad program that went to France, England, and Germany. There are photo albums documenting the study abroad trips from 1995 to 2003. Other materials in this collection are a plaque of outstanding research from Perdue School, CDs documenting the Perdue School museum and a study abroad trip, and blueprints for the Perdue School and museum built in 2011.

This box contains three VHS video recordings of three individuals who lived in or around Salisbury in the early Twentieth Century: Mr Henry Fields, a shop owner in downtown Salisbury and World War One veteran; Mr. John Bailey, a World War Two veteran and farmer from Quantico; and Mr. Ted White, World War One veteran, previous mayor of Salisbury and Pharmacist from White & Leonard's on Main Street. Each of these men describe life in Wicomico in the early Twentieth Century and the changes that occurred in the area throughout their lives.

Salisbury Ephemera collection

Included in this collection are color and black and white photographs and negatives of aerial, street and city-scape views of Salisbury, Wicomico County, Maryland and surrounding regions including Somerset, Dorchester and Worcester Counties and Sussex County, Delaware. The collection of images captures local businesses, school buildings, public events, neighborhoods, and area attractions from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s.  Also included in the collection are historic photographs of Salisbury and the Delmarva Peninsula dating back to the 1850s that Thurston collected.

The White and Leonard Drugstore records documents the changing storefront window displays through a series of photographs from 1932-1955 in Salisbury, Md. The photographs depict the various types of goods sold, but also highlight storefront design and marketing tools used by businesses. The collection also contains a scrapbook that documents White and Leonard’s newspaper ads during the 1950s. Furthermore the collection documents the Salisbury bicentennial parade in 1932 and local shows that aired on television.

Assorted materials from Whitehaven Heritage Association storage includes 1901 set of "The Courier" newspaper; misc. Collection includes materials donated by the Whitehaven Heritage Association, such as The Saving Bank of Nanticoke, Maryland's Bank Almanac 1920, 1923-1924, 1926, 1928 as well as several other news and church ephemera from Salisbury and Baltimore, MD from the 1920s. There are two correspondences from March 1904 to a unknown recipient from D.W. Dolbey, Jr. of the White Haven Council No. 24. Also included is correspondence from Robert L. Jeffers to Conor Ralph Bennig in 1976 related to Christian faith and one from John W. Davis to his wife in 1855. An audio cassette tape from Emily Griffon's funeral service in 2000. There is an epic poem written in 1992. Additionally, there is a series of land plats for S. W. Dolby's land created by P.S. Shockley from 1903 and 1918 and a patenet for "Hayward's Delight", 1910. Finally there is a map of Delaware with an arrow to Bethel Church.

Wicomico Public Libraries Collection

This collection includes family research, publications, photos and historical materials from the Wicomico County Free Library (now Wicomico Public Libraries). Series 1 is family research related to the Dashiell family and some materials related to other families.The Dashiell family documents consist of hand-written family history manuscripts and family trees. Two folders contain other family history research and records. The second series is historical materials. The United Fund of Wicomico County records are documents related to contributions by local businesses and the contents of scrapbooks for yearly fund drives. The 1856 school workbook contains mathematics notes. The legal records are an index of Wicomico County civil court cases, a Works Progress Administration record of workers on the Johnson Pond Spillway construction, and photo reproductions of manuscript records of postmasters of Wicomico and Somerset Counties. The Creative Works are two sheet music booklets, prints of Wicomico County sketches, and a list of winners of the Salisbury Award. The books are a pictorial history of the American Civil War from 1862, Delaware American Revolution bicentennial booklet on Caesar Rodney, A Handbook for Delmarva Archaeology, and a facsimile reproduction in book form of The Proceedings of the Constitutional Convention of 1776 and First Maryland Constitution. Series 3 comprises publications of local interest and content. Series 4 consists of photos and images associated with the Salisbury and Wicomico County area. Some Words About Preservation was a publication of the Maryland Historical Trust that gave news on the status of historical site preservation. Tidewater Times contains articles related to Eastern Shore topics, as well as advertisements of area businesses. The collection of journals and journal articles consist of Maryland and Delaware archaeology articles and journals, two copies of Shellfish Digest from winter 1979, and four issues of the Old Somerset newsletter from 1985. Series 4 contains photos and images of Wicomico County and Salisbury dating from the 1890s to the 1970s.

The W.B. Tilghman Fertilizer Company Collection contains a vast array of items and business records pertaining to the W.B. Tilghman Company. These include such items as company photographs, ink stamps, and a stock certificate seal press. There are also stock certificate books from throughout the 20th century. Another portion of the W.B. Tilghman Fertilizer Company Collection is "The Tiller" newsletter. The collection contains a near complete compilation of the newsletter covering the years 1943 to the 1960s. Inside the newsletters, there are articles on historic homes, buildings, and plantations from Delmarva. On the business side of the collection, there is an assortment of meeting minute books for shareholders and directors meetings, ledgers, journals, crop books, company records. There are also historical records such as the Wm. B. Tilghman Company charter, Governor’s citation of the 100th Anniversary of the Wm. B. Tilghman Company, and the Enlistment Certificate of William B. Tilghman, 1912.

William H. Edwards papers

The William H. Edwards papers document the intensive research and preparation of a prominent Methodist Preacher from Virginia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Drawing inspiration directly from the Bible, religious articles, and other religious leaders, William H. Edwards’ created unique sermons and extracted details from short and long Biblical passages. The papers date from 1883-1958 and highlight his relationship with his wife, fraternity, and religion. His dedication to family and Methodism is documented in correspondence, scripture and sermon notes, newspaper clippings, and publications.

William Heaton Papers

This collection contains items and documents from the musical career of William Heaton Whitworth, more commonly known as William Heaton, spanning circa 1900-2006 (with the bulk from 1920-1950). William Heaton was born in England in 1891 and moved to Massachusetts in 1909. He traveled the country performing with various theatre groups. In 1914, while docked in Maryland with the James Adam Floating Theatre, he met Agnes Tawes, the woman he would marry just two-weeks later in Salisbury, Maryland. He continued his musical career, playing the organ and piano for the Carolina Theatre, Palace Theatre, Hunt’s Casino Theatre and New Arcade Theatre. In 1944, Heaton and his wife opened Heaton’s Karmel Korn, a popcorn stand on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Heaton died of a heart attack in 1952, at the age of 61.
