Abstract

This oral history collection documents the influence of Baseball in Delmarva and its legacy in those that remember it. Topics covered include the Delmarva Negro League, the influence of Baseball in the African-American community in Salisbury, the restoration of the Oaksville baseball field in Oaksville, Maryland, and other affiliated topics. Compiled transcripts are attached.

Scope and Content Note

NCOH-0010_00001: This interview was conducted by Creston Long with Willie Downing on September 11, 2019. Willie Downing (as of 2019) is an active member in the Salvation Army as a sports coach. In the interview, he describes the influence of baseball on his childhood and community with various stories and tales, and his interest in the Negro League. His goal to revitalize baseball in young African-Americans in Salisbury. 

NCOH-0010_00002: This interview was conducted by Creston Long with Kirland Hall on November 15, 2019. Kirkland Hall is a curator at the Oaksville Baseball museum in Oaksville, Maryland. In the interview, he describes the influence of baseball on his childhood and the various teams that used to exist all over Delmarva. He also shares his passion for his local baseball field and the efforts to restore it and make baseball a fixture in the community again.
