Abstract

The Harry L. Harcum papers documents Harry’s involvement in local businesses and civic engagements in Salisbury, Maryland which include the development of the Boy Scouts of America, Wicomico County chapter as well as the associated African-American Boy Scout Troop, 1910-1917. In addition to Harcum’s engagements the papers also reflect the purchase of land in the Camden Avenue district as well as the design and construction of his family home, the Harcum House on Park Avenue. The records provide insight as to how residents of Salisbury utilized local business. Harry Harcum bought and sold stocks, this offers a glimpse of how Americans engaged in trade domestically and abroad.

Biographical History

Harry Lee Harcum (1890-1970) was the son of Blan and Mary Harcum. He spent most of his life in Salisbury, Maryland. He attended Beacon Business College and the American Correspondence School of Law. He was married to Ruth Kennerly Harcum, together they had three children: Ruth Harcum Messick, Eunice Harcum Holloway and Elizabeth “Bettie” Harcum Morris. Harry worked as Lawyer and Developer.
