The Records of the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) document the Salisbury University office from its founding in 1999 (as well as the initial planning stages in 1998) to 2012.
“PACE was launched in 1999 to reinvigorate the idea of a state university as a place where civic and political involvement could be developed and where students' spirits of generosity and intellectual curiosity could foster engagement. PACE is a nonpartisan institute committed to civic learning, engaged citizenship and community involvement that sparks interest in public affairs and civic life for the students and the communities of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
The Institute:
· provides students with enriching learning experiences through interactive, thought-provoking seminars and classes,
· sponsors lectures that bring public speakers to campus,
· serves the region as a non-partisan "public square" for ideas and debate,
· and offers hands-on student internships.”

Additional note: PACE was founded by political science professor, Dr. Harry Basehart, and philosophy professor, Dr. Fran Kane. The managing director for nearly all of its first decade was Pauline Genhrich.
The Records of the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) document the Salisbury University’s office from its founding in 1999 (as well as the initial planning stages in 1998) to 2012.
Included are:
· Administrative files maintained by PACE directors regarding meetings, planning, finances, and employees and interns
· Published materials like annual reports, newsletters, articles and press releases about PACE activities, and photographs
· Files related to various programs and projects that PACE has undertaken
· Data and reports related to surveys conducted
· Materials related to lectures, forums and other events hosted by PACE such as the Sarbanes Lecture Series
· Other documents related to the Civic and Government Leadership Academy, Hargreaves Fellowship, and conferences attended
In most cases, documents were left in their original folders; however, these original folders have been grouped with similar folders and the collection inventory reflects these groupings rather than the original folders.
Files in the Administrative series (1) may relate to programs, events, and other documents in later series. This is especially the case with the files of Fran Kane in Subseries 1.1 where the co-founder’s records were maintained in their alphabetical filing and not dispersed to other series.
