Abstract

The Dr. Francis Kane Papers document Dr. Kane's work as a Philosophy professor at Salisbury State College, now Salisbury University, from 1981 to 2003. The majority of the materials relate to Dr. Kane's work with a Maryland Committee for the Humanities grant that he was awarded in 1981. There are also materials related to events hosted by the Philosophy Department and the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE), the 2003 Spring Philosophy Symposium, educational programs he was involved with, the Institute for Ethical Concern, Salisbury Foundation, and the Global Seminar program. Document types include correspondence, newspaper clippings and articles, proposals, press releases, thank you letters, and event programs. In addition, there are audio recordings of various philosophy symposiums from 1977 to 1991; however, many are undated.

Biographical History

Dr. Francis Kane was a professor of Philosophy at Salisbury University for 35 years. He served as Chairman of the department and saw the college's transition from Salisbury State College to Salisbury State University, and finally Salisbury University in 2001. His focus was on political philosophy, ethics, and biomedical ethics. Dr. Kane also co-founded the Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) at Salisbury State University in 1999.  He published a book entitled Neither Beasts Nor Gods: Civic Life and the Public Good in 1998. Dr. Kane retired from Salisbury in May 2010 and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus.

Outside of Salisbury, Dr. Kane developed a nationally recognized policy for teaching about religion in the county school system and, in his spare time, coached youth soccer.

Folder titles were transfered from original folders. The materials are divided into three series: Series 1: Maryland Committee for the Humanities Grant, Series 2: Professional Papers, and Series 3: Philosophy Symposiums.

Series 1: Maryland Committee for the Humanities Grant contains materials related to the grant awarded Dr. Kane in 1981.

Series 2: Professional Papers contains the remainder of the collection and incorporates the different programs Dr. Kane participated in.

Series 3: Philosophy Symposiums contains audio cassette recordings of various Symposium speakers.
