A.K. Talbot papers

Dr. Alfred K. Talbot was born in New York City on September 1, 1916. He attended the Hampton Institute and later the college of William and Mary. Prior to his tenure at Salisbury University, Talbot taught as a teacher, was named Principal of Carver Elementary School, and became the Assistant Principal of Burton Heights School. From 1962 to 1964 he served as the President of the Virginia Federation of Parents and Teachers and the Virginia Teachers Association. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Teachers Association and in 1968 became Supervisor of Elementary Schools of Williamsburg Public Schools. In 1970, he joined the Education and Sociology departments at Salisbury University and was the University's first full time African American professor. Talbot died on July 20, 2004 after 30 years of service to the university. Throughout his life, Talbot was involved with the Civil Rights Movement, the NAACP, and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Talbot's collection include correspondence, reports, and other printed material from his tenure at Salisbury University, his involvement with the Civil Rights Movement, and his activities within Virginia's education system.

The Salisbury University Alumni Association was founded to “develop and foster an abiding loyalty to Salisbury University; promote a professional and ethical spirit; encourage active participation in all activities that pertain to the betterment and growth of the University; unite graduates and undergraduates in Salisbury University; and take such other actions as may be deemed appropriate to promote the interests and welfare of Salisbury University.” (From the Salisbury University Alumni Association website.) The association achieves their mission by hosting events throughout the country to unite alumni, hosting reunions, and distributing newsletters. The association encourages its members to send notices of nuptials, births, and other lifetime achievements for publishing in the association’s newsletter. The Alumni Collection contains proposed constitutions, Alumni Association history, membership and reunion directories, invitations to reunions and other alumni events, wedding and birth announcements, postcards, ephemera, newspaper clippings, newsletters from 1950 to 2005, and a medal commemorating the completion of the Alumni House in 1996. Documents surrounding the Alumni Association’s induction ceremonies from 1931 to 1951 are present.
Archaeology Month Lecture Collection

This collection contains a DVD recording of a April 18, 2009 lecture given by Dr. Elizabeth Ragan at the Nabb Research Center entitled "Over the Sea to Somerset: 17th Century Trade in a Neglected Corner of the Chesapeake." The presentation focuses on finding Colonial Era artifacts in old Tobacco Plantations, and how, because of funding and distance, this type of Archaeological Research isn't done on the Eastern Shore. The presentation then proceeds to detail her findings and their implications on our knowledge of the Colonial Era Eastern Shore. In addition, there are a poster advertising the lecture and several video tapes of the lecture.

College Financial Records

This collection contains the financial records of Salisbury University during its first several decades of existence as the Maryland State Normal School and State Teachers College. The documents consist of ledger books with finance information dating from the mid-1920s to the late 1970s, with loose memorandums and calculations inside some of the books. The earlier items in the collection contain handwritten correspondence from William J. Holloway, the first principal of the school. Records include student payments to the school, disbursements from the school various Salisbury and national businesses, student refunds, cash payments, receipts, financial aid payments, payroll records, itemized supply and book purchases, and receipts. Records from the tenure of William J. Holloway contain reference to audits of the school by the state, and some refunds not received by students in correspondence and memorandums left inside the ledgers.

The Dr. Francis Kane Papers document Dr. Kane's work as a Philosophy professor at Salisbury State College, now Salisbury University, from 1981 to 2003. Dr. James M. Welsh joined the English faculty at Salisbury State College (now Salisbury University) in 1971 and co-founded Literature/Film Quarterly in 1973 with Tom Erskine. For many years, he reviewed films in local newspapers and television. The James Welsh Collection includes Welsh's film reviews from the 1970s to 2013, as well as approximately 2600 film press kits, lobby cards, and press books that were used to write the reviews and 600 u-matic videotape audiovisual press kits used for television. Also included are many film studies journals that date from the 1940s to 2009, an almost complete run of the Literature/Film Quarterly from 1973 to 2009, and teaching materials used in film studies classes. Film titles are included in the inventory.

Since 1967, Salisbury University students who completed theses for their master’s degrees have deposited a copy in the University Archives. With the addition of Nursing and Education Doctoral Programs in 2015 and 2018 respectively , students also deposited their Doctoral in Nursing Projects (DNPs) and Ed.D Dissertation Projects. Until 2023, original copies were bound and cataloged and are available in our stacks. Additionally, many unbound duplicates of masters theses were placed in this collection. Beginning in 2023, unbound, but cataloged, copies of Theses, DNPs, and Ed.D dissertations were deposited into the University Archives. This collection also holds some administrative files relating to the binding, copyright, and digitization of the Master Theses from 2009-2010.

The Records of the German Club and German Study Abroad Programs collection documents the history of the German Club at Salisbury University and two study abroad programs offered by the Modern Languages Department between 1980 and 2015. Plans for a new library began in 2006 with a Library Program Part I that outlined the goals of what the new library should accomplish and then finally in 2016, ten years later, the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons opened its doors to Salisbury University students and staff. The records include information on the design process and the various meetings through the construction from 2014 to 2016. The collection is mainly centered around the various design and construction blueprints, but also includes design catalogs, emails discussing safety measures for the building, and price bids.

The Richard Hoffman Collection contains documents that reflect the time Dr. Richard Hoffman spent at Salisbury University from 1993 to 2019. He was professor of management for over 25 years and interim dean of Perdue School of Business for three years. During his time as interim dean, he oversaw the addition of a museum to the Perdue School. He gathered a small library of scholarly journals on business, management, and marketing. He also led a winter study abroad program that went to France, England, and Germany. There are photo albums documenting the study abroad trips from 1995 to 2003. Other materials in this collection are a plaque of outstanding research from Perdue School, CDs documenting the Perdue School museum and a study abroad trip, and blueprints for the Perdue School and museum built in 2011.

Wroten was an Easton native and worked as a professor and chairman for the history and political science departments at Salisbury University for 25 years prior to his retirement in 1980. The majority of Dr. Wroten's collection is his research notes, which cover a large number of topics such as Assateague, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, pirates, and the history of the Delmarva area. Dr. Wroten's teaching materials include articles and notes he had for specific topics, such as the American Civil War, Native American history, early colonial life, and local history, as well as syllabi and research papers from students. Included in this collection are also a number of his published articles from his newspaper column as well as scripts from his TV program on WBOC.
