Abstract

The Salisbury University AmeriCorps records document the administrative work and events held by the Salisbury University chapter of AmeriCorps, ShoreCorps, from 1995 to 2014. This collection includes photo albums, chapter member and leader handbooks, grant applications, and yearly progress reports of activities.

Administrative History

AmeriCorps was established in 1993 as an agency for the recruitment and placement of volunteers. It grew out of the Community Service Trust Act of 1993, signed by Bill Clinton, and is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).  Members commit to full-time or part-time positions offered by a network of nonprofit community organizations and public agencies, to fulfill assignments in the fields of education, public safety, health care, and environmental protection. The organization has been known to operate in chapters on college campuses and came to Salisbury State University (SSU), now Salisbury University, in 1995.  SSU's program, ShoreCorps, works under the oversight of the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism (GOSV) in Maryland. ShoreCorps is open to students and community members and is a partnership with community-based organizations serving at-risk youth and other vulnerable populations.  For more information about ShoreCorps' current activities visit, https://www.salisbury.edu/administration/americorps/about.aspx.
